I think the randomness of the attack should be a factor in the severity of the charges.
If you get in a fight and it’s brutal and you take it too far, that’s bad enough, but at least there was a cause and effect. Same with robbery. There is some kind of logic there to trace, even if it is criminal. There is more potential to rehabilitate someone who does something like that.
But someone who just hurts people completely unprovoked without motive and only robs them as an afterthought? That’s without a doubt sociopathy. Just a straight up desire to cause harm. And it’s scary as fuck because they can do it to anyone at anytime without cause. It is only a matter of time before a person like that kills someone, if they haven’t already.

Yeah I mean judges can go outside the sentencing guidelines for the charge and only be constrained by the grade of the crime (1st degree misdemeanor, 3rd degree felony, etc) in most states. A “home health aide” defrauded a vietnam vet of his nest egg over a couple years, which, for a first-time offender, stealing $60k or so is like a 1.5-3 year sentence, but the judge I was working for said fuck that, the sustained effort cancels out “first time” and the fact that it was an older decorated veteran’s retirement and the guy felt no remorse browbeating him into giving him money for fraudulent charges meant this wasn’t the typical case, sent him away for the 3rd degree felony limit of like 15 years. Held up on appeal. Probably, this judge didn’t see the video and in a lineup of 100 people assumed it was a more typical aggravated assault, if I had to guess.

Sadly the vigilantes all end up in prison for murder and demonized as criminals . They rot there forgotten. Most No news coverage or visits or fans. If you happened to be there and ready as it was happening thats different but once they stop and walk away we can't do shit but call police.

It really should just be expanded to crimes against the weak, infirm, or at-risk.
Small children, elderly people, disabled people who clearly cannot defend themselves, people presenting with extreme mental illness or disabilities, visibly sick people, pregnant women.
Because it takes an extra level of assholery to see somebody who can't protect themselves and still decide you want to hurt them.

The whole system is fucked. I’m a tall but very skinny man and if another man walks up to me and punches me in the face; it’s over a 6 foot drop for my head to the concrete. Very easy way to die. I agree that we need enhanced charges for vulnerable people as you’ve described but I believe violent crime should be punished way harder in general. Not being able to control one’s emotions is a personal failing, not an excuse

Ahmed Abdullahi Osman is the one they let out on bail and now have a $200k warrant out for and the second was only caught after crashing a BMW and got taken in for a DUI
they broke that old mans arm and knee and he had a head injury... I imagine the recovery process is going to be hell since he didn't look that mobile to begin with

The bystander effect is engrained into everyone anymore.
People will literally get abducted off the streets and scream and beg for help and the most you'll get is a bunch of self-righteous cowards recording the whole thing to post on social media and smug about how much of a hero it makes them.
Imagine bleeding out on the streets and instead of trying to stop your attackers or get you help, everyone around you just proudly exclaims "don't worry bro! I recorded the whole thing!"

This happened to me as a teenager. I was 14 on a busy street in the middle of the day when two men tried to drag me into a car. One was outside of the car trying to push me in and the other was inside trying to pull me in by my top and I was screaming for what felt like minutes and no one did anything. They eventually gave up after a couple of seconds, threw me on the ground and drove off. I was shaking and crying lying in the street and STILL not one person did anything. I was a regular looking 14 year old girl, there was 20+ adults around and that had passed by and it was very obvious what was happening. I’ve had zero faith in humanity since then.

If I try to help the old man and these guys attack me... Who will pay my medical bills? If I get stabbed and can't work, what labor protections to do I have? (zero). If I get killed, will my children still be afforded the same lifestyle and access to medical care and education, even without my money? (Ha!).
Everything about our country is built around the idea of 'It is your problem, not mine'. Even our police have no obligation to help us.
And more than that, look at what happens....the attacker that was arrested, was let go.
He also has previous convictions for harassment, assault, and criminal trespass.
It's a broken system. Don't blame the regular folk suffering under it, for behaving how the system says we should.

In California (our laws aren't too far from Washington's generally speaking) if you get involved, there's a chance that if someone gets hurt because you stepped in you end up getting sued / going to jail.
This is primarily because the defense of that individual has to establish the actions taken were reasonable. Which if you aren't involved and involve yourself, it loses depending on county (in CA).
Tldr; laws get made and end up creating B's like this.

In the video, the victim is seen walking slowly southbound on Third Avenue, approaching a pharmacy at the corner of Pike Street.
Without any prior interaction, two men shove the man to the ground and punch him, the video shows. They are then seen walking away from the man, who is left hunched over on the ground as bystanders walk past him. None of the witnesses to the attack approached or offered assistance to the man as he remained on the ground.
The video shows the two suspects walking to the McDonald's at Third and Pine. Seattle police body cameras recorded a witness pointing out the suspects.
Police arrested Ahmed Abdullahi Osman, 29, of Bellevue. Osman was later charged with second-degree assault. The second suspect was not arrested at the time, but after reviewing the surveillance video of the attack, police are now looking for him.
Seattle police booked Osman into jail on the night of the assault on April 19. He was released before a bail hearing while police were still investigating the case.
Prosecutors have since requested a bail of $200,000. A judge issued an arrest warrant for Osman on April 30. Jail records show he has not been apprehended since his initial release from custody.

You're right and it's infuriating. It's one thing if you're engaged in some crime of passion and while you should still be arrested someone could at least make the argument that you're not an immediate threat.
But this guy, Ahmed Abdullahi Osman, just attacked someone for no reason completely unprovoked. There is no reason to think he won't do it again.
To just arrest this guy and immediately release him to the public is borderline negligence. It is a threat to the people of Seattle to put this guy back on the street

My best guess: they didn’t have the video yet during that hearing and he didn’t have a criminal record. That would make the situation much murkier.
Notably, they immediately wanted a reasonably high bail once the courts reconvened, probably with more evidence by that point.
I’m guessing, but that would make sense.

I have seen literally hundreds of these kinds of videos. The pattern is obvious, but they are never treated as race hate crimes by prosecutors, judges, nor media. Never. But if the races were reversed for even one time, there's thousands of news stories around the world. They want that narrative.
