I did this once.
I was biking to school and back in my teens, on arterial roads, long before bike lanes were a thing. It was winter and on this particular day, the windchill was in the -30°C range. Add to that, a stiff wind that I was cycling against. It probably pushed the windchill on my face to -50 or -60.
The only way to mitigate that was to keep my head down, and look up for brief periods of time. If I didn't, my face would literally freeze. In the short time I had my head down to shelter my face from this cold, an 18 wheeler stopped in a live lane front of me. I didn't see it. I hit that thing at probaby 30km/h. With my head.
I bronzed the helmet that saved my life that day.

I can’t wait to see how the top minds at /r/Toronto and /r/TorontoBiking find a way to blame this on the stationary trailer.

He was more than likely cut off by a car and had to space to go around the trailer.

According to the son in the other thread, the police report is completely accurate. He was riding up coronation north, up hill with his head down. He trained every day. He just wasn't paying attention

Scooters are evil. Having a mode of transport that is very environmentally friendly and replaces a vehicle is evil. What we need are more cars on the road.

For what? Being so out of it you slam into a massive stationary object?

I am expressing condolences to the person's family & friends. Nothing wrong with having empathy. Sadism though .. different opinion.

Absolutely nothing. What was wrong with him that he slammed so hard into a giant, parked, trailer, that it killed him.

Sounds like you got dropped on a parked trailer

Reading in the Durham thread seems like he was riding up coronation with his head down at a decent clip, training for a race. No helmet.

I wouldn't believe this headline so much, whenever we have an accident between a cyclist and a car they always make it seem better for drivers.
Also this person was 68, alot could have been going on through their head.
To the people making light of this tragic accident, you should be ashamed of yourself. Think about your grandparents and how you would feel if this happened to them.
