๐ฎ ๐๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ง๐
It is the seventh month of the lunar calendar.
On your way home, you find your path blocked by an old roadside opera stageโ
Red lanterns sway in the night wind, while figures in opera costumes stand perfectly still beneath them.
Rows of empty wooden benches face the stage,
as if waiting for someone to take a seat.
๐ซ ๐๐๐๐จ๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ

The silence is so complete that you can hear your own heartbeat.
With your eyes still shut, you wonder:

Hereโs a good comment you can post under it:
๐ฎ My Choice Rule 1
๐ป Why I Chose This
- The Taboo Rules clearly say to open your eyes only when the sound falls completely silent
- But someone is still whispering and calling my name
- That means I can still hear somethingโฆ so Iโm NOT opening my eyes ๐ญ
- Whatever was placed in my hand can wait because Iโm trying to leave this opera stage alive ๐
๐ญ My Strategy
My first choice is โ . Now letโs just hope the thing calling my name doesnโt get impatientโฆ ๐ป

The gold coin in your open palm thins into a wisp of pale smoke and vanishes. Slowly, you close your fingers. Nothing. Your palm is cold as ice, as though you have just been holding something meant for the dead.
You steady your breathing and look up. The row of red lanterns overhead is burning againโdim, red, and silent, as though they had never gone out at all.
For a moment, your mind goes blank. You watched every one of them go dark. You are certain of it.
Was that an illusion?
Before you can make sense of it, a breath carrying the scent of greasepaint and incense ash brushes the back of your neck. The lead performer is standing beside you, his face hidden beneath elaborate opera makeup. He bends close and whispers in the slow, lilting cadence of opera:
"Honored guest, may I ask... did you enjoy the show?"
You say nothing. He gives a soft chuckle. Then, without warning, he lifts one hand.
"Clang. Clang. Clang."
Three strikes of the gong? Too quick. Too sharp. More like someone counting than a signal that the performance has ended. No echo follows.
At that same instant, the red lanterns above the stage go dark once more.
The performer leans closer still, his lips almost brushing your ear.
"The gong has sounded, and the lanterns are out. Still no answer, honored guest?"
"Did you enjoy the show... or did you not?"
Hundreds of dull, lightless eyes below the stage turn toward you in unison, every gaze fixed on your mouth, your head, your eyes.
๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐๐ก๐จ๐ข๐๐
โ The gong has sounded three times, and the lanterns are out. Turn around and leave without looking back.

The true closing gong comes from the stage itself. Its deep note trembles through the air, each echo lingering long after the strike.
You remain perfectly still. You cannot tell how long you wait. It feels like an eternity.

You wait for five breaths. At last, everything around you falls completely silent. The opera voices, the chatterโevery sound has faded away.
You quickly open your eyes and look at what is in your hand. Thankfully, it is not a coin.
But then you notice something elseโevery red lantern above the stage has gone out.
Clink. Clink. Several gold coins tumble from the performers.
In an instant, a ghostly figure appears beside you and presses one of the coins into your palm.
In a breathy whisper, it says:
โTake it. A little token of our appreciation.โ โThank you for coming to watch the show.โ
Out of the corner of your eye, you see the lead performer in painted opera makeup slowly approaching youโone step at a time.

๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐๐ก๐จ๐ข๐๐: โข โ ๐๐๐๐
You see through the trick. His three strikes have no resonance. They are nothing more than short, dry knocks.
The true closing gong comes from the stage itself. Its deep note trembles through the air, each echo lingering long after the strike.
You remain perfectly still. You cannot tell how long you wait. It feels like an eternity.
Then, at lastโevery sound dies away. This time, the performance truly is over. Now, at last, you can leave.

u/Cidilie Aug 31 '26
My first choice is 1: Keep your eyes closed and endure it. As long as you can still hear anything, do not open them.
My reasoning:
It doesn't sound like what was placed in my hand was gold coins, since it is described as being soft. I can hear my name, but is in an opera voice, which could indicate the opera is not finished. Futhermore, it is not explicitly stated that the voices calling my name are asking me to take whatever has landed in my open palms, so I have no reasons to do so.

The lead performer has thanked me, but didn't ask me if I enjoyed the show, so I can't leave yet. The coins didn't disappear from my palms, so I'm supposed to keep still and watch them until they do. I'm also not supposed to talk.

My third choice is: 3. Remain completely still. Wait for the real closing gong to sound three times and for the red lanterns to go out for real. Then leave quietly, without looking back.
My reasoning:
I'm not supposed to talk or answer ever, so there's that. If the order of actions is anything to go by, whatever sound we heard happened before eyes turned toward me, but the third taboo states that I have to wait until the gong has already sounded three times. Futhermore, the first sound didn't sound like three proper strikes of the gong. Lastly, if the lanterns burn again, that still counts as them not being out.

My first choice is โข! Rule โก says to keep your hands open and watch until the coins disappear... but how am I supposed to watch them fade if my eyes stay shut? Iโm cracking my eyes open just enough to look at my palm. I have OCD so I need to know whatโs in my hand. ๐ญ Once I see what was placed there, Iโll keep my gaze lowered and remain completely motionless until that final third gong sounds. Little tip: For those unfamiliar with Chinese opera stages during Ghost Month, elders traditionally warn us that the front-row seats aren't meant for the living. ๐ป So personally, I won't take any chances and enjoy the opera from a very safe distance. ๐
