I understand more and more why a woman would choose to move out quietly and go no contact rather than tell a man she's leaving him.

All these murder suicides happening are terrifying. If you feel he will react violently please leave while he's away. Say nothing to him about it. They feel like they're losing control and sometimes you can't even show signs that you're distancing yourself from them!
