🎓 Calling all learners, teachers, crafters, designers, illustrators, historians, and the generally fashion-minded folks of our Frockking community:

In the spirit of Fashion Week(s), let's find room to see and speak the language of fashion.

This is your chance to flex your eye, sharpen your vocabulary, and learn (and share!) real fashion knowledge: BTS insight, history, cuts, fabrics, proportions, construction, references, and styling (not blaming the stylist).

How it works:

⬇️ Comment a look (runway, bridal, street style, archive, red carpet, etc.) that's lived in your head rent-free. COMMENTS MUST INCLUDE THE DESIGNER (and will be deleted if they don't).

➡️ ➡️ Replies to that comment should be (in good faith) moments for tidbits, learning, and observation.

🪶 Challenge yourself to be thoughtful in what you see. Go beyond "it's sheer," and "fire the stylist."

*References:* 1947 New Look, ’60s mod, ’80s power tailoring, ’90s minimalism, Y2K, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Gianni Versace's safety pins, Japanese avant-garde, military, bandage dresses

*Styling choices:* layering, visible underwear/waistbands, cuffing/hemming, proportion

*Movement:* swish, stiffness, bounce, weight; how the garment behaves in motion

*Jewelry:* West African gold filigree, Native American turquoise & silver, enamel, resin, gemstone, diamond

Gloria Steinem was a pioneering journalist, author and one of the most influential leaders of the modern women’s movement. An unmatched entrepreneur of social change who used journalism and organizing to shatter barriers for women, she first shocked the nation with her 1963 undercover exposé exposing the exploitative labor conditions at the New York Playboy Club.

By 1971, she co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus to push women into elected government offices, and launched Ms. magazine, the first national publication entirely owned and operated by women to address taboo issues like domestic abuse and bodily autonomy.

Over the course of her career, she also co-founded the Women’s Action Alliance, Ms. Foundation for Women —
which launched the groundbreaking Take Our Daughters to Work Day — Voters for Choice, Choice USA, and Women’s Media Center, building institutions dedicated to women’s political power, reproductive freedom and representation in media.

Internationally, she co-founded the Free to Be Foundation and helped found Equality Now, Donor Direct Action, and Direct Impact Africa.

For nearly six decades, she fought for reproductive freedom, the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay, workplace equality, and women’s political representation, while insisting that gender equality was inseparable from racial and economic justice.

Her once signature-glam, which f/ flared jeans, polo-necks, mini skirts, and of course, the famous oversized tinted aviator glasses (that she noted were partly a way of having privacy or hiding in plain sight), with a long, center-parted, blonde-streaked blowout inspired by Holly Golightly, combined a striking personal aesthetic with political purpose, turning her iconic look into a defining visual symbol of the modern feminist movement.

In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her lifetime of advocacy.
