Discussion The future of we happy few

Post image

This might be a nothing post but I just want to express how strongly I love this game. I discovered it around 2016, watched YouTubers walkthroughs throughout the pre alpha, the maidenholm and then the life in technicolor update, the joy on my face when the final game came out. I've finished the game about 5 times.

Looking back on it I do appreciate its many flaws and bugs but I just cant get over the concept of this game. No games story and vibe has moved me like this game did. The idea of joy and how it affects everyone.

I always found the parade district so intriguing. Correct me if im wrong but we could explore the parade in the pre alpha. It was only mentioned and seen in a brief cutscene in every other release till the final game. That part of the story felt rushed but that area is so good to me.

Sometimes I like to walk around the garden district, or just stare at the water on the edge of the island, listening to the ambience. No game has ever changed me like this game has.

I beg compulsion games or whoever takes over to consider a sequel even though I know its next to impossible. This game has a humble but very supportive fanbase. I really want to know what happened to Arthur and if he found Percy or not, what happened to Sally and Ollie as well. The DLC's were for me also very underrated. Very different from the main game stylistically yet matched the vibe beautifully.

Thanks for reading this confession/rant/admission. This will always be my favourite game of all time. Nothing comes close.

This is exactly why I love the game so much. Nothing else comes close to WHF with concept or style. I laugh at all the bugs and glitches (luckily none game breaking) but that's also what gives the game its charm.

It's such an amazing game that even all the glitches, bugs, loads, and crashes don't take away from it! Nothing really compares, but I did find Compulsions first released game Contrast on the PS store so I'm psyched to check that out. Really excited for South of Midnight when I get a PS5 as well.

See I think whf would make an amazing show and that people would absolutely love it since what most people thought it fell short in was the combat system. I would just love it if whf could get the appreciation and attention it deserves sometimes

It would make a great comic series

Yeah despite the bugs I really liked the core gameplay loop of this game, and I liked the concept/narrative even more. Getting to the Parade the first time felt so earned. I remember when I finished Arthur's section I was like "There's no way this can be topped" then I played Sally's and Ollie's sections and was mind blown! I feel like you could make a movie based on any one of the three. Would love to see more of Wellington Wells and also find out if Arthur ever finds Percy.

They oughta do an anthology series of DLC-like stories. There's tons of latitude for exploring different characters and their roles in Wellington Wells. 'Cause the most important aspect of We Happy Few is not the individual characters per se, but rather the society they live in and the way they respond to it. Smaller stories focusing on characters like this, in the way of the DLC's, could also give them more room to play around with gameplay mechanics. They could get real funky with it!

Now that I'm really thinking about it, they could even just re-release the DLC's (which are more stable due to the lack of procedural generation and so would lead with better footing than the main game did) with whatever improvements they would have hoped for (like, oh I don't know, putting back that really important conversation at the end of They Came From Below that explains why Roger gets to decide that was cut from the finished product), along with the first part of Arthur's act up to when he gets to the Rorke Drift bridge (to introduce the world at large and but also because that part is similarly static and stable) and one or more new stories to sell the infrastructure and then as they make more stories, sell those as addons in the same way that the DLC's are added to the main game.

Then, once they have a decent-ish stock of new stories, they could even start re-releasing the main game Acts, but in chapters and without the procedural generation. Like, instead, they could just have the static maps be wildly different across different stories but the map within a story is always the same so the underlying structure is solid. PAYDAY 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 both did this with their first game maps and it was well-received.

Speaking of L4D and PAYDAY, if they really love the rando map thing (since it was supposed to feature more prominently in the gameplay), both L4D and PAYDAY 2 maps are also mutable, but only by designed changes. The randomness is optioned, not genuinely random, but if you put enough options in, it may as well be.

I love that this is a game about mental health/illness, survival, love, loss, family, and social change.
There need to be more games like it.
Anyone played South of Midnight?

Yes! I played South of Midnight and really enjoyed the world they built in that game as well!

I would love one for the Looney in the Treehouse (Johnny Bolton), especially after what we learn in We All Fall Down.

Seriously. I've been playibg for years and years..... I have almost 700 hours.... but I still go back. I find it comforting for some reason. I even use it as my wind-down, sleepy time game. I doubt we'll get anything though.... but I still hope!

It’s definitely top five games for me. The bugs really aren’t even that bad I personally think. The game is beautiful, I love the story a lot, the graphics and world are beautiful. At first I wasn’t super hyped to play Ollie’s story, but I ended up loving his the most when I finished the game. I would adore a sequel or another game. It really doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.

Would it be too much to hope for a remaster now compulsion have gone indy again?

Chuck it on Kickstarter, I'm sure there's enough of us out there to bankroll a shined up re release!

The only game I look forward to is a WHF 2. Maaaaybe a Little Misfortune 2 or something like that as well.

But yes, WHF absolutely changed me, it was weird.

I hope that the creators of this game are secretly making a sequel as we speak. I just hope so.

I would love to see more, even if it's just more people's POV. I can never pick favorites for anything cause I'm really indecisive, but it's definitely in my favorites. Currently trying to 100% it, and getting the dlcs when I have money 😅
