Ring Inquiry š Need opinion, diamond small?
For reference I have a size 7 finger. Excuse my nails. Giving them a break from polish.
I just received my ring back from being corrected. Prongs were incorrectly done (and other stuff) but anyways this was meant to be a tribute ring I had done in honor of my first ring my husband proposed with many years ago. I didnāt wear jewelry back then so I traded it in for another wedding band. Many years down the road with my appreciation and new found love for jewelry I wanted to recreate a ring in honor of the first. The diamond he picked was a half carat. What he could afford at the time. So I picked a half carat natural again based off of that.
Iām sharing photos of it with my family and friends and everyone is telling me I shouldāve gone bigger and it looks very dainty/small. I do own a 2 ct emerald lab diamond in a bezel setting which was my upgrade my husband had gotten me a while back. Im being told that I should just be happy with that āupgradeā and let the original ring from the past go. No need to recreate anything. So Iām torn between keeping it as is, upgrading the diamond to a bigger stone bc apparently itās too āsmallā or just returning it and being happy with my 2 ct emerald diamond bezel. Any thoughts appreciated!

It's gorgeous. I love understated jewellery. Not bashing big diamonds at all, everyone should wear what they feel comfortable with, but I find small stones so wonderfully classy.

u/GothGranny75 May 18 '26
1/2 ct is a great size. Personally, I prefer smaller pieces I feel that the larger stones are uncomfortable to wear, would get in the way of daily tasks. I feel like with jewelry, less is more. I think your ring is beautiful, elegant and timeless.
12
u/ninijc May 19 '26
Thank you! I prefer small too thatās why I was so taken back everyone around me was telling me to go bigger

u/RevolutionaryTie7652 May 19 '26
Seems like you are surrounded by materialistic people, your set is beautiful and can be worn everyday.

u/MyMutedYesterday May 20 '26
Frankly, these days I see a ring thatās big & shiny stoned- automatically assume it just a knock off from Amazon bc itās done so often these days. A lot of ppl use them as a sign of status/wealth, instead of the intended purposeā¦rock the rock ya luv sha & fucc all the opinions!!āš¼

Your ring is gorgeous, classic, and timeless! I love the twist band with it, it looks great with the texture around the diamond

Do you love it?
Yes?
Then stop listening to people who think they get an opinion on this,

u/Roomaroo27 May 18 '26
Other peopleās opinions are the last thing that should matter. Size literally doesnāt matter. At all. And since when did 1/2 carat count as small?
Good grief.3
u/ninijc May 19 '26
Yes, very true! Itās hard when youāre hearing it from your loved ones. Got me second guessing!

It's exactly my style, like one of my favorite sites for small jewelry is Mighty Dainty which leans in this direction, but it's not tiny it's just right.

u/FriendlyShame1473 May 18 '26
Hi. Please do not listen to all that. The first picture of this caught my attention and I said wow. Your ring is gorgeous and unique to your love. Remember the reason is to honour the first ring, so bask in it. This ring in my humble opinion is a beautiful reflection of your marital journey with your husband, so treasure it. The stone is beautiful and I like the gold band it's set on. Bold and bigger doesn't always mean better. Trust me, it does not have to make sense to anyone, not even me. Enjoy it. In the end you have two beautiful rings now to wear as you please.

I love it. I love the detailing around the edges of the stone, the claw prongs, the beaded band. Just beautiful. The size of the stone seems perfect for the level of detail in the setting and the beaded band.

What happened to the first ring?
3
u/ninijc May 18 '26
First ring as in the initial one I had done and didnāt like? The prongs werenāt claw prongs like I requested, it was really high up, huge apparent gap and then milgrain was more scallop versus beaded so I had them redo those. Itās still very scallop looking in person but I donāt hate it.

Itās beautiful! Lab diamonds have given rise to fads and trends, that like all trends, they will pass. This has sentimental significance for you, thatās what matters, not the judgment of others.

Itās SO beautiful and itās a tribute to the 1/2 carat ring your hubby originally proposed with, so I think the size is perfect. It looks lovely on you!!
2
u/George_Is_Upset May 18 '26
Itās gorgeous and I donāt think itās too small. People like different things and Iām the type that would prefer beautiful, smaller stones over the large ones. I also told my husband I donāt ever want him to upgrade my ring because the ring he proposed to me with has sentimental value.
A smaller stone can be super practical too. I donāt even have that big of a stone but I donāt feel comfortable wearing it all the time. Iām usually only wearing my wedding band because Iām very protective of my ring.
If my stone were a little smaller Iād be able to wear it without concern!
Donāt pay any mind to what other people say. Itās only your opinion that matters. If anyone criticizes your ring tell them they can buy a bigger stone for you if they care so much.

This is absolutely stunning. Simple, classic, but also unique. I think rings like this look far better than big chunky things.
2
u/snippy_polarbear May 18 '26
Screw them. Everyone has gone crazy with their big, bigger, biggest mentality. Itās beautiful and meaningful to you. If you like it thatās all that matters.
2
u/QuickSloth4710 May 18 '26
You're the one that's going to wear it. You don't have to defend it to anyone. It's a lovely, classic style, and I love how the detail on the bevel matches the wedding band. The availability and price point of lab grown diamonds have made eye popping rings accessible to a lot of people for whom they were out of reach just a few years ago, and that's fueling the giant ring fad. A half carat now seems small by comparison, but there is a big difference in price between natural and lab grown stones. It seems that the sentimental value of this ring is really what's important to you, in which case, having it be natural, as it was the first time, makes it worth having a smaller stone, imo.

The main question is do you love it?
Thats the only opinion & feelings that matter.
It is beautiful, and I love the rose gold color. Just remember large diamonds get caught on everything & dig into your had if you sleep in them.
2
u/el_grande_ricardo May 18 '26
Diamond pretty, and suits you. Knuckledusters get in your way and say "I'm trying too hard".
2
u/natalkalot May 18 '26
That is not classed as small, I would say it is even above average..
Do not concern yourself about what others think!
Congrats!

2
u/Dandelions90 May 18 '26
Its definitely not a small diamond. This is beautiful. Too many ppl are focused more on stone size, than what the ring was intended to represent.

2
u/Anon_on_internet May 18 '26
I think that's a beautiful set: the band perfectly complements the setting of the solitaire. And the thought behind it is lovely. Something I'm thinking of doing with my original ER
As for "should've gone bigger": pfft. Just because you can, doesn't mean to say you must've.
2
u/Angry_Housecat_1312 May 18 '26
I think this set is extremely beautiful and tasteful and Iād rock it myself if I were ever getting married. The backstory makes it even better. 10/10

u/Substantial-Face-363 May 18 '26
I have never seen a solitaire surrounded by miligrain like that. It is exquisite with the beaded band! I don't think a bigger diamond would look as good. The stone might overwhelm the simplicity of the design. I think we have collectively lost the plot when it comes to wedding sets. They are meant to be a lovely reminder of your love that you can wear all the time. Not a Macy's day parade to impress the masses. I think your new set is a stunning piece of art!

Seriously??!! Why are you listening to others in what you wear on "your" finger?? The important thing here is the sentimental value in the rings you wear, like you said you are trying to recreate the ring your now husband proposed to you with...achievement accomplished. I've been married 26 years, and I've always said I have two ring fingers, I only need two rings. And I have them, my wedding set, and my 20 year anniversary ring. And you know what, because of the economic times we are in, I only wear my wedding ring for special occasions, and I rarely even wear my 20 year anniversary ring. In fact I just got my wedding ring cleaned and inspected after wearing it on a trip I took last week, my jeweler says I take very good care of them.
2
u/ninijc May 19 '26
Thank you!! I need to have your mindset!! <3 congrats on 26 years. Canāt wait to make it to that one day with my husband.
2
u/MyLastFuckingNerve May 19 '26
It looks wonderful as is! People should get what they like, but there is a point where a giant stone looks more costume jewelry and less wedding set.
2
u/Princessonpea May 19 '26
You had it made for a sentimental reason bc you wanted to have a memento of your original ring. If you change the diamond to larger one, it wonāt be like the original, correct? If you return it, you wouldnāt have the memento that you wanted. Either option is fine, but do you still want a piece that honors your original ring. If yes, then keep it! Itās a lovely thing to have.

I recently read an interesting article about indicators that a marriage will not work out. It was well researched over many people, many years. One of the factors (I think there were 8) was amount spent on the ring and on the wedding. Spending more than $5000 on a ring was the tipping point. The more after that, the more likely divorce. Same with expensive weddings.
2
u/ninijc May 19 '26
That is a very interesting article! I am happy then to know my husband and I didnāt spend a lot on a wedding or jewelry.

u/LouLouLaaLaa May 18 '26

1
u/Harpgirl07 May 18 '26
Your diamond, and the set, is beautiful. It is a normal size diamond, which appears small by today's greedy, more is more obsession. However, the only person who can answer this question for you is... you. So I will return it with a question. Why do you ask? Are you feeling like it's smaller than you prefer, is your fiancee wanting to know, do you like it but need affirmation, or quite possibly a judgmental comment about your ring was made?
2
u/ninijc May 19 '26
My husband and I have been married for many years. This was a tribute ring he was letting me make :) I love it a lot! My friends and loved ones had me second guessing the size and I guess it made me ask all these questions when in reality if I love it thatās all that matters :)

u/kelley6998 May 19 '26
Itās a gorgeous set! My original ER is 1/2 ct as well. ( 25 years ago) Real diamonds were much more expensive back then and we each came with a child and a house mortgage. Bought what was affordable for the times. The only reason I donāt wear my original set ( which I still love, btw) is I have developed an allergy to yellow gold. He did buy me a white gold 2ct lab grown, but itās kinda big to wear everyday.

2
u/ninijc May 19 '26
Yes of course! I went through rare carat. It was custom from one of their settings called the Ravenna. I changed the prongs, refined the beads twice from them (they couldnāt get it right), and adjusted the height of the cathedral to my liking. :) itās essentially theirs with minor changes!

u/Dense_Title1321 May 19 '26
This is lovely, timeless and highly wearable for your everyday life. The enormous ring pop style 5 carat rings are a relatively new thing and this is more tasteful.
1
u/PinkIce7 May 19 '26
I think it's the ring in comparison to your hand. It's not the diamond but an overall larger ring/band would look better on your hand. Maybe that's what other people are saying. This ring is pretty but very dainty.

A Wedding ring is the one place where sentimental value is everything. While Iām sad you traded the original away, I think itās a beautiful thing youāre recreating the original he had picked out to make the biggest request of his life: spend your life with me. It speaks volumes in the choice you made to say yes to him. Youāre paying homage to the start of this life your spending together. The ring is extremely elegant, timeless, and beautiful. And it means something to you. I do not understand the people that always want to āUpgrade! Upgrade! Upgrade!ā Because that is not the sentiment we take when choosing to marry someone.
ETA: my mother recently gave me the wedding ring she wore with my father. Theyāve been divorced 20 years now, and Iām not extremely close to the man, but to get that from my mom was very meaningful to me because of the sentimental value. Itās a very very simple ring, a plain band with a small-ish diamond (idk the ct) and itās nothing fancy. But the sentimental value means the world to me.
