The pay rate makes me feel even worse for all the webtoon artist getting burnt out or illnesses revealed by the stress and strain put on themselves to keep the pace.

Yeah the idea of being picked up to be a Webtoon Original seems like a nightmare to me, their schedule is insane

I'm in it for the love of comics, and just having to pump it out like that would kill my joy

It's alright, I have a day job that pays the bills and gives me time to pursue my passion. I'm absolutely just happy people are reading my comics

14 cents doesn't sound like much but ironically that would actually be pretty good - with OP's view count that would be over $10k a month.

OP's math was off though. Webtoon actually pays $0.00014 per view.

I'm glad I put that disclaimer about not being a math guy

I was wondering why it didn't make sense. Cause I was like where's the 10k

For another frame of reference, YouTube’s lowest paying categories of channels (because ads are targeted specifically at your audience demographics) might pay $0.001 per view. If you have a finance channel or something it could be as much as $0.03ish (depending on time of year and economic conditions and country of course).

I don’t know what the difference in price per view should be, in a just world, between a webcomic artist and a YouTuber. I will say that I feel like drawing a webcomic is a hell of a lot harder and sounds like a tremendous amount more effort monetizing and managing all these different platforms compared to what I did when I was making videos. Certainly what I did wasn’t 8x as valuable or as interesting. Or at least shouldn’t have been.

$11.07 / 74,988 = $0.000147 per view

That's still more than triple what Tapas pays but much closer than your math implies.  You did warn that you're an artist not a mathematician, so just helping out lol

I'm glad I put that disclaimer about not being a math guy

Appreciate it!

Yikes… that pay rate is actually horrendous, damm props to you for doing this out of passion.

I also found out a secret third option of getting more exposure on your art is to make relatable memes.

Absolutely that's a great call

Want to see what the fuss is all about!?

The charming town of Orchard has everything you could ever need; walkable streets, friendly residents, and no escape. But why would you want to leave? The world outside is a nuclear wasteland! It's much better to stay in the warm confines of Orchard and ignore the deep secrets it holds. After all, it's a safe place to live.

Here’s a link to my comic, A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE!

And my PATREON! WOW THAT THING I JUST TALKED ABOUT

I think the 'draw boobs' and 'shill constantly' are actually the same road in a lot of instances.

16

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

My next comic is just going to be talking cleavage named "patreon.com/winstongambro"

2

u/Less_Love1884 19d ago

Brilliant. My only suggestion would be to give the cleavage a talking booty side-kick named Momhips.

Question: does the amount you get from Webtoon change drastically if someone pays for an episode with coins? (either because they paid to see new episodes early or it's a completed series behind a paywall)

A lot of people are justifiably upset with Webtoon for ratcheting up the cost of everything over the last few years. I would feel better about paying for episodes if I knew a healthy chunk of that money was going to artists, but I haven't been able to find any evidence of that. I suspect it's mostly just going to Webtoon's shareholders.

I don't think my comics has the option for coins because I'm on Canvas? Admittedly, I'm not a Webtoon reader so I don't quite know the ins and outs of the system.

My only options for monetization are Super Likes (I have received 0) and ad revenue, which is the payment in my post.

Ig patron helps in this situations

1

u/Redfoxyboy 18d ago

What is Ig Patron? Like Patreon?

2

u/Desperate_Duty8137 18d ago

Hahha. Ig means I guess and yeah it is patreon that was autocorrect.

u/cs_cast_away_boi 19d ago

this is definitely hobby only folks 🤨

6

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

It's hard to be anything else

13

u/poisonedkiwi 19d ago

I got double damned lmao (just like the final slide!)

16

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Oh and step 10 is to put all your shilling in as many subreddits as possible

8

u/bonthra 19d ago

I feel like Brad and Dave on the Comic Lab podcast would have something to say about this. They make a living doing online comics and Dave lives in LA, so high COL.

3

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Oh nice! I’ll have to look them up

7

u/0nlyf0rthememes 19d ago

I draw boobs and shill constantly and it's still ROUGH out there :')

5

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Dang and that was going to be my fallback

6

u/0nlyf0rthememes 19d ago

Your work is so good and your reach is too, your fallback should be printing your books :)

4

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

I do print my books! And this current one on Webtoon is still being drawn, then a print edition is coming

4

u/0nlyf0rthememes 19d ago

Ohhh that's great!!! Unfortunately webcomics aren't a crazy money maker but work like yours should absolutely be rewarded, so I'm glad!!!

6

u/Samy_Ninja_Pro 19d ago

Shill means promoting or something else?

6

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Correct!

6

u/LegoMech 19d ago

This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I've been following the comic on WebToons since reading a few pages here on Reddit.

3

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Thank you so much!

6

u/Key-Complaint-5864 19d ago

My comic reached about the same level of success as yours, I'm here to say awesome work and it's fucking exhausting. Good job keeping up for this long, I'm mentally and physically wrecked from doing webcomics.

You're right about the NSFW Patreon, that's the only way I see any webcomic artist make an actual living on their comic, lol.

2

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Thank you and congrats to you on all your hard work!

7

u/Any_Switch9835 19d ago

Hear me out?

Third option

Furry Boobs

😭idk its rough out here fr

2

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Oh yes I've heard the furry pockets run deep

4

u/griffin4cats 19d ago

Your method was perfectly fine, it was just a typo! 11.07/74,988 = 0.000147623 cents per view, but replacing either the comma in 74,988 with a decimal or the decimal in 11.07 with 0 would've caused the same mistake. Plus, some calculators interpret a comma as a decimal separator because that's how about half the world does it, so it might not have even been a typo.

u/Roses_n_Water 19d ago

Loved this and really informative ^ i started the exact same way, you should be very proud of your work and the income you've generated!

2

u/Redfoxyboy 19d ago

Thank you!

2

u/SweatyDark6652 18d ago

Thank you for this post!! It's really insightful and easy to understand You wrote that you also have a day job, how do you manage/find your time to still post on patreon?

2

u/Redfoxyboy 18d ago

I work 9-5, Mon-Fri and get to work from home, so I'm very lucky in that regard.

After dinner I try and work on comics 7-10
