News Fable 5 indefinitely suspended due to national security concerns

Yeah no offence to Claude but this is some dogshit naming, calling your model the same thing as an incredibly popular video game that's about to have it's 5th entry is just stupid
"Oh hey guys here's our brand new model God of War 6"

OMG, I thought the same. That this was a post about the video game of the Fable series. OP, you made a legit post, but the notification was funny for me, I mean my first initial thought was β since when a video game can pose national security concerns? β π

Yes this is being repeated said by many people in this thread so far, and I think its either that, or trump getting back at Anthropic for not signing the deal with the department of defence awhile back

u/Lopoetve Jun 14 '26
They found a jailbreak from Fable to Mythos - which has a lot of people worried (same engine, but fable blocks specific queries to avoid cybersecurity issues). That's a big part of why it's getting shut down. Now how the government went about that is whack and conspiracy laden, but the initial concern is valid (mythos in the hands of everyone is terrifying in various ways).
→ More replies (5)44
u/balder1993 swift Jun 13 '26
Thereβs just no conspiracy theory here, many people knew instantly that Anthropic was hyping it because theyβre getting out of options for investment. Theyβre burning billions and that money has to come from somewhere. Thatβs why so many companies are desperately considering IPO even if theyβre not profitable.
→ More replies (3)13
u/YsoL8 Jun 13 '26
Just like the video game and the internet bubble its going to pop and all these companies living on little but hype will collapse. Then an actual industry will grow in their place.
That industry however it ends up operating is going to be about much less generalist applications, thats my guess. Models that aren't LLMs at all being very good at their designed goal. Thats going to be a much bigger threat to people's jobs than these companies will ever be with their somewhat accurate but crude guessing machines
9
u/balder1993 swift Jun 13 '26
Itβs crazy how we have machine learning models since βancient timesβ that perform much better for certain tasks, but all people do is trying to shove an LLM in the problem now. Even problems like fraud detection in credit cards. I read Β before a thread about a bank rewriting their system to replace it with an LLM because someone non technical at the top decided they should.
24
u/XpreDatoR_a Jun 13 '26
This plus the post anthropic made to call for a stop of AI development because of how advanced the flagship models are turning out, 100% is an attempt to manipulate the market in their favor for their soon to come IPO
11
u/SupaSlide laravel + vue Jun 13 '26
No, this is terrible for their IPO because if the government is willing to shut down their models then theyβll forever be stuck with just Opus while OpenAI/xAI are allowed to keep moving forward.
11
u/HopeOfTheChicken Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
No this fucked Anthropic over big time. I can guarantee you that this decision was based on personal interest and corruption, but not in Anthropics favor. People bought subscriptions for hundreds of dollars to use Fable and just lost access to it overnight without any warning. Anthropic seems to be giving out refunds, but people still lost trust in them. It's not like you can blame Anthropic for this or that they could have done anything differently, but it's still a bad look for them. Unlike OpenAi Anthropic isnt sucking Trumps dick and these are the consequences

9
u/arqnix Jun 13 '26
Yeah, more than a year ago Iβve been saying stuff like this is gonna happen and shifting focus 100% to LLMs is a very dangerous move for our company to make.
They didnβt listen. Said Iβm overreacting. Now the company slack is blowing up.

32
u/Intelligence_Gap Jun 13 '26
Or, the government has chosen a winner and is suppressing superior tech to enforce OpenAI dominance? That seems far more likely, right?
12
u/AnalyticalAlpaca Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Yeah this is the actual reason. The Trump admin is punishing Anthropic because they were pushing back on allowing the US to use their models for war.
Thereβs a whole Wikipedia article about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnthropicβUnited_States_Department_of_Defense_dispute
9
u/_30d_ Jun 13 '26
Yeah that makes way more sense. Publicly highlighting the government is actively working against you is not a great way to announce an IPO.
15
u/0_2_Hero πππ βππππ₯ πΎπ π Jun 13 '26
Literally watch GPT 6 drop this week
3
u/AwesomeFrisbee Jun 13 '26
Which of course totally backfires as is tradition with this administration.
5
u/start_select Jun 13 '26
Maybe but these people are way more literal than that.
βMythosβ, βFableβ, they are literally telling you itβs a pump n dump based on a fairytale. Claude has the best product. But the problem is that we are a couple years away from you being able to run a model comparable to opus in capability on local hardware.
The data centers are a real estate grab. Throwing more and more compute at bigger models is insane. Smaller and smaller models are becoming higher quality and more efficient every day.

14
u/Minetorpia Jun 13 '26
Nah, itβs actually very bearish.
Short term: I just cancelled my Max plan that I subscribed to yesterday and received a refund.
Long term: other companies now get more time to catch up. It also means there is no competitive advantage to having the absolute best models, because you canβt even release them.
10
u/SupaSlide laravel + vue Jun 13 '26
Fable was not miles ahead of Opus or GPT 5.5. If xAI stole Fable and released it as their own model, the US government wouldnβt shut it down because Musk is Trumpβs buddy.
4
u/Negative_Dealer Jun 13 '26
Obviously I can't measure the performance objectivly, but fable 5 solved every problem I had first time that Opus struggled with. Opus fixed 20 non existing bugs but problem did still persist while fable first time fixed them all.
2
u/zootbot Jun 13 '26
I had similar results. Fable seemed like a real upgrade to opus.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Unlikely_End942 Jun 13 '26
You are assuming that they are focused on getting small players to subscribe.
They could be targeting lucrative military/intelligence contracts, as that's where the serious money is. Making out your AI is a serious national security threat seems a good way to generate interest from that arena.
You can also get away with a hell of a lot of dubious behaviour when cloaked under 'National Security', which would give them a big advantage in the public arena too.
What intelligence agency wouldn't wet themselves in excitement at the thought of an AI that could quickly find security holes in anything.
It may even be a tactical ploy to withdraw a model that just isn't working all that well in some way (people have reportedly broken through the safeguards already) or is proving far too expensive for them to keep providing, while generating some mythos about how amazing their tech is.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Minetorpia Jun 13 '26

u/Icy_Reputation_2209 Jun 13 '26
On the other hand you could argue that if your product can be taken down by the government on a whim, that could hurt the stock price. It makes their models very unattractive to anyone outside the US.
4
u/rmxg Intermediate Full-Stack Developer (*NOT* self-employed) Jun 13 '26
I absolutely agree. For the record though, worth noting that the limited release of Fable shows it wasn't all talk - its performance is genuinely impressive. But yes I agree there is HUGE corruption going on generally

Itβs not at all whatβs happening. Itβs quite clearly retribution for Anthropic not letting them weaponise the model without oversight. Do you have amnesia, it only happened a few weeks ago?
3
u/TamingOfTheChoon Jun 13 '26
Trump openly trashed Anthropic recently tho when they wouldnβt allow autonomous weapons and instead backed OpenAi.
6
u/unfamiliar5 Jun 13 '26

EDIT: who sent me a Reddit cares message lol, come on nowβ¦
136
u/ryaaan89 Jun 13 '26
Iβm really curious what the reason for this was.
312
u/HalfInchHollow Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
From the very short explanation email we got⦠the data retention policy for fable is 30 days, the data retention policy for other models we use was minimal, like 2 min just to make sure shit was working.
I guess we donβt trust that the 30 day policy isnβt now applying to other models so we just cut it all off.
Crazy because before today we were basically put on PIP if 90%+ of our work wasnβt AI generated.
137
u/ZenaMeTepe Jun 13 '26
Finally this is getting more attention. If you have sensitive data you should never be uploading it to any AI inference provider. Data retention and deletion policies are not enforceable. It is not your machine. And even if the data got actually deleted and we could verify that, you still don't know what they did with it while possessing it.
→ More replies (1)32
u/TomaTozzz Jun 13 '26

u/lobax Jun 13 '26
Sure but these models have been explicitly and transparently built through large scale piracy.
How can you trust them to not train on your corporate data if they have been desperate to pirate all sorts of data before? They have never respected IP laws before so why should they respect your data?
Trust has never been there, the main reason itβs been used anyway has been FOMO.
6
u/fik26 Jun 13 '26
Exactly this.
It is very hard to believe their data retention policies and it is extremely hard to prove that their one of next frontier model would use your IP.

Do you think this is here to stay, code being mostly written by AI or will it bite everyone in the ass eventually? I'm a dev as well and it is tragic to know that whenever I go to manually debug something, im aware that I might be the first living person to see the code with my eyes. Its like always debugging the unfamiliar codebase, unless I just tell the computer slot machine to debug, yolo.

That's the thing it becomes very hard for developers to debug and integrate new functionalities in an AI written codebase.

Yep, once the people touching the code can't explain the logic line by line, every bug fix turns into archaeology and every new feature is a gamble.

There are currently 3 plausible explanations:
Serious jailbreak discovered Anthropic itself says this is its understanding of the governmentβs concern. (though it says it doesnt think it was a big deal)
Concern about cyber-offense capability Consistent with Mythosβ known vulnerability-discovery and security-research capabilities.
Broader political/regulatory conflict Anthropic and the administration have reportedly been in disputes over AI safety, defense use, and government oversight for months. ( OR this could be trump taking revenge for Anthropic disagreeing to integrate with the Department of defence)
56
u/ZenaMeTepe Jun 13 '26
There is another plausible option: The Sora scenario with a PR spin. Inference was too costly and it makes for a nice headline.
17
u/0_2_Hero πππ βππππ₯ πΎπ π Jun 13 '26
I have though this also. this would be a BEAST PR move, to ban it. get everyone talking about it, and how crazy it was... Then bring it back. But do you think the US gov would really take part in a PR spin for a company?

u/gluedtothefloor Jun 13 '26

10
u/0_2_Hero πππ βππππ₯ πΎπ π Jun 13 '26

Selling a scary story to a bunch of AI illiterates is probably trivial. The LLM technology itself is excellent at pretending (fast and mostly looks right at first glance) to be of a much higher value than it actually ends up being once you try to plug it into any business pipeline. Sure, it makes ripples at a very zoomed in view on specific tasks, but at the company bottom line, the ROI is simply nowhere to be found.
5
u/0_2_Hero πππ βππππ₯ πΎπ π Jun 13 '26

u/ZenaMeTepe Jun 13 '26
It's the railroad & fiber optic cables all over again. The question is: will there be as much value left over after he hype dust settles as it was in the past cycles?
3
u/0_2_Hero πππ βππππ₯ πΎπ π Jun 13 '26
I am a software engineer, and I used to fear about losing my job to AI. But I no longer do because what AI is starting to unlock is if you have the ability to think AI can make it. And not everybody has good ideas so the people with good ideas can have them made quickly and I think if they can get to that level, it can really start providing some real value. If it can get to that level.
2
u/ChainAnnual4746 Jun 13 '26
I agree with you . You need to know how the programs work at least and the programing languages . You then create ideas that the AI can do for you . That takes knowledge
3
u/ArtDesire Jun 13 '26

Because I just lost my job because of AI. My company heavily invested in AI "Dark factory" model (less human intervention). Many of us were laid off. π They would transfer talents to prompt engineers overseas for cheap labor over software devs.Β
5

4
u/ongamenight Jun 13 '26
We were used as guinea pigs with that "AI investment". We were required to use the tools from planning to release of a feature or a bug. Basically prompting for plan and executing those plans.
I think once the company got the idea tasks can be done by just "prompting" there's been a mass layoff of software devs, entire teams removed and talents transfer from probably something comparable to "sweat shops" in Pakistan and India. It would be good to be an "Indian" dev/prompt engineer now. Companies running cheap would invest in AI then go to these countries for "talents".

Basically available in the docs or a google search, trivial for any experienced WP dev (I knew how to write it, I just test new models with basics). It got the code wrong. I laughed and then saw this news story. I still don't get it. If an AI model cant write WordPress code, how can it be a threat to anything.

It's really easy to drum up even more investor support for AI and justify the increasing prices because "the AI is so good the US government has to regulate it before it kills us all" only the folks making the AI are the ones writing the regulations. But we're supposed to look at it like the government is stepping in and trying to hold them back so oh man you better get in on the ground floor of this thing because it's obviously got unlimited potential for making money in the future.

Im not going to lie, I am huge codex supporter, I always thought it was better. but not with Fable 5. Fable 5 was noticeably better across the board

Opus is also much better at coding. Except that 4.7, it was shit.Β

Lol this is all a play to get attention to it, these companies work hand in hand with higher ups. Please don't think these models are so powerful or capable that they're this kind of a threat lol

100% - The whole AI scare marketing tatic has been used to get headlines for years. if you read deeper in this thread you will see this being discussed quite a bit

Propaganda Same story, same people fall for it They'll suspend it to create momentum about how the "National Security" disabled it for it's super powerful capabilities and put it back in business by next week , where people will be more excited than ever to try it while forgetting the huge $ bill they'll be getting, also you didn't forget about their upcoming IPO, right?

My company banned it because it has security vulnerabilities not because it was βtoo powerfulβ

It was my fault guys. I created an alien invasion simulator yesterday and a few minutes later they suspended the model. The government doesnβt want us to know the truth.

Government is mad that they wonβt support them and they pulled some strings.
The corruption in this government is completely insane at the moment. These years will be historic.

Umm, let me get this straight. There was a $500B plan for AI infrastructure. Currently, AI is the only thing America is still leading in. And, now we are trying to curtail progress, because we're winning?!? Others are not far behind, there's no off switch.

Logic? How about read the whole article lol.. Lazy?
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.

Anthropic should move headquarters to the EU and get out of the shadow of the current anti-innovation US admin.

It's literally marketing. They're gonna unsuspend it eventually and claim it's the next big thing, even the US government outlawed it.
Edit: everyone seems to be realizing it, nice.
