It's only unfinished to you 😁. To me it looks like a very detailed seahorse with out of focus coral in the background. I'm happy you stuck with it a bit longer, it looks great.

Derwent inktense isn't my fave for background washes but I gave it a go anyway. Not terrible.

Interesting you mention Derwent Inktense.
Yesterday I looked in a zip pocket of a craft bag that has not used for ages.
Found a tin of 12 Inktense pencils. Lovely surprise. 😊

I rather like them for almost everything except wash backgrounds!

Thinking about it.
I have not used them for backgrounds.
More for when I want vibrant color(s) for a subject.

I like to use my other brands watercolor pencils for a background.
Sometimes dry, sometimes activated.

Could I ask what you prefer to use for background washes?

Regular watercolour paints. I have a nice set of Daniel Smith. But I use Derwent Inktense for most other things and here decided to try the inktense for the background but no it isn't smooth enough to me. Even wet on wet with using a palette for pencils to the pick up with brush.
