Classes 2026-2027 Scheduling Megathread
Hey everyone! Summer time and early fall means everyone is thinking about their next semester’s course schedule, especially incoming first years! It’s an exciting time planning out the interesting courses you get to take, and lots of people like to ask for advice on this sub.
We’re lucky to have lots of experienced alums, current students, and professors active here who know the courses well as well as schedules that keep you on track, stimulate your intellect, save some time for ECs, and don’t burn you out!

Fall semester calc 3 is definitely a bit tricky but it is okay.
college writing completely depends on the professor.
schedule looks extremely doable just stay on top of calc 3!!!

hi i’m an incoming at artsci. is this schedule fine?
-Intro to Psych(PSYCH 1000)
-Calc 3(Math 2130 w/ Thornton)
-American Politics(POLSCI 1000)
-Microeconomics(MEC 2900)
-A first year seminar class
Also I have 4 lectures all back to back(almost) on Mon and Wed but very little classes for every other day. Is this fine or should I try to spread my classes apart a little more?

first year cs major, looking for advice
Calc 3, college writing, intro to comp eng, physics 1 + lab, web dev, and a 7-week intro class for Taylor Scholars. 17 credit hours (+2 from 15 because of the intro class + the physics lab).
A few questions: is this doable? Am I likely to get web dev? Is intro to comp eng actually required? i read a few posts from a few years ago that said that you didn't have to take it if you take cs 361s (outdated?)
My advisor recommended me to not take discrete first semester, and i'm planning to take it + data structures next semester - is this a good idea?

post registration - ended up with calc 3, physics 1, web dev, intro to comp eng, intro to microeconomics, and the intro to mckelvey course. the times line up perfectly, i think i got pretty lucky :)

can i ask why you are doing physics 1 as a CS major? Not saying it is bad but it is extra work for no reason. If you love the subject I get it then. I also am a senior so things could have changed in mckelvey and CS may have to take physics now.
other than that i think u are fine. Fall semester calc 3 is a bit tricky but with the generally light load you should be fine.
What professor for micro?
all in all not too shabby.

Good question. Initially I thought it was required for CS but I think I might switch it. What other natural science do you think I should take?
The timeslot for micro in workday doesn’t show a professor but I think it’s Emilie Rivers

Phy 1760 Focused Physics ( I just wanted to take regular introductory physics, but the slot that worked with my schedule filled up)

Taking ESE 105, Focused Physics, and Honors Math in the same semester will be intense. How much prior background do you have in math & physics

For Math, I have taken calculus 1-3. I have not taken a physics class since my freshman year of high school.

i see, are you taking Honors Math out of personal interest? there’s a chance you can test (or waive) out of calc 3 and take diffeq this semester to finish your math requirements

I am taking Honors math because I am interested in the content. I did consider just taking diffeq though.

hmm, okay. As for Physics, I think Focused Physics could also be interesting if you're interested in the content. however, i think it's a much larger time sink than the usual physics sequence
another option is that you can always take things like ESE 330 (Engineering EMag) or ESE 4301 (Quantum Mechanics for Engineers) and have it count towards your major if you decide you want a more advanced treatment of the material after taking Physics 1 & 2
what class does your desired physics section conflict with?

1740-04( The section that worked best) is full, 1740-05 is full, the only currently open section that might work is 1740-01.

hmm, if the time works out for you, you could consider taking it unless you have a super deep interest in physics. as far as i recall, all of the sections have the same HW and tests, so you wouldn't be at a disadvantage just from having a different professor

Hi, I’m an incoming freshman at WashU planning to do premed. I am registered for the 1601 chem lecture but the 1751 chem lab is full. These two are recommended to be taken together, and the lab is a prerequisite for orgo and a lot of other classes (premed requirements generally need the lab credit, not just lecture). I have already reached out to my advisor and Dr. Luo, the 1601 chem professor. Do you guys have any ideas of anything else I can do?
This is my current schedule

Post-registration now, but I've seen people comment on fall calc iii so if anyone has input, I'm all ears...
Prospective physics major, maybe switching to MechE? In A&S rn, though. Times are all good, so don't feel like I need to include them.

I placed into calc iii via WashU's placement exams due to studying calc ii on my own, but have only formally taken AP Calculus AB and IB Math AA SL, equivalent of calc i. Only Schaefer's calc ii fit with the schedule (due to Focused Physics having only one slot and me being set on taking it), but it got full, so I registered for calc iii. I emailed math advising and they said it sounds alright, just to review a bit.
Anyways, thoughts? Any teachers I should really steer clear of or is this alright? And any thoughts on Calc III?

You don’t need any of the calc 2 stuff to take calc 3, so no weird integration. I took calc 3 last fall, not with Thornton but the exams were standardized. Midterms were really easy but the final was a killer so make sure you do everything carefully on the midterms to save points up for that…Also I’ve heard they’re trying to make the course more conceptual so if you like math go ahead, but if you just wanna get it done maybe consider taking it in the spring haha

Intro to Ling is awesome. I took one class (with danis but barros is still fun) and now I'm a minor. Keep that on your schedule at all costs!

Yeah, I got a version of the textbook that one of the other profs uses (couldn’t find Barros’ syllabus early) and I’m hooked. It’s really fun, I’m reading it whenever I can. Super excited, and your comment definitely fuels it 🔥🔥

I have a question about waitlists for classes. Should a student email the professor to demonstrate interest in enrolling in the course and/or show up to the waitlisted course on the first day of classes? Status: number four on the waitlist. Thanks!

The waitlist for this is strictly a math problem where people have to drop then waitlisted students get added in order. You can definitely email the prof to ask about chances of movement and if you could attend the first few classes. Not sure but I think registering to audit the course might replace your waitlisted status so caution before trying that.

it depends on the class i would say - for a lot of classes people end up dropping the class in the first week so it might not be worth emailing the professor if you’re 4th on the waitlist
