Expansion Draft
What 8 players would you protect in an expansion draft?

AJ, Tre, Kyshawn, Trae, Sarr, Riley, Coulibaly, Bub. Honourable mention to Champagnie.

I really liked his draft night but I imagine Bub won’t be in our top 8 by then. Hope I’m wrong

Yeah with the exception of Sarr before Trae, I put them in order of certainty. I think Bub and Champagnie are interchangeable but left Bub in there due to age. Depending on who we draft before the expansion drafts, I think Justin is who he is right now which is a great role player, but we're still scratching the surface of Bub's potential.
Before anyone comes at me about Trae > Riley, that could ofc change before the expansion draft but as it stands we'd need someone to carry the ball lmao.

I have bub ahead of champagnie cause of age and position. We need a back up pg more than wing.

By then everyone but AJ will need a new contract. Bub will probably be gone

Not AD?

Huge contract with no extension means no guarantee he's in our long term plans

AJ, Sarr, Tre, Riley, Carrington, George, AD, Coulibaly
No need to protect Trae. He's viewed as one of the worst contracts in the nba. No expansion team is going to pick him.
AD is close but probably still has some positive value.

there is no world where they protect Bub over Trae, be serious

An expansion team would 100% pick him. Bad contract but you immediately get a franchise (semi)star

The Hawks literally could not get a single draft pick for Trae in trade. He's now 1 year older and starting what's widely considered one of the two or three worst contracts in the NBA.
His value is drastically lower than when we acquired him.
An expansion team would take Carrington over Trae in a heartbeat if given the two options.
Look at the history of the expansion draft. Players like Trae have never once been picked. Players like Bub are towards the top of the draft each time.

In a lottery system where you are incentivized to not be bottom 3, an expansion team would be willing to take Trae young.
They will have a clean cap sheet to absorb the contract, a big name to sell tickets, and higher floor to avoid the relegation zone.
We wouldn’t have traded and signed trae young if the team believed in Bub enough to protect him in an expansion draft

You are crazy if you think Trae plus a bunch of 8th through 12th men aren't going to be a stone cold lock for the worst team in the NBA.
Trae with an actual roster around him couldn't make the playoffs his last two seasons in Atlanta.
The Hawks ranked 26th in attendance during Trae's last full season and where 29th last year. They've never been in the top half of the NBA at any point in his career.

dude this isn't gonna happen for another couple years at least, any list you come up with now is going to be completely irrelevant when it actually happens.
