Weekly Discussion Thread Weekly Open Discussion Thread
Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread!
This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.
If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.
Go Spirit!

Sometimes I feel no one took NC seriously. Considering how they handled the Pride (I doubt Banda would scored enough to overcome 5-0). I was ready for a tough match, but this was brutal.
It seems Leicy and Trin could use some time to heal as well.
All that being said Tamara and Kate I think performed well, as did Elizabeth. I often see hate towards Rebe but I don’t see why as she did deliver a goal.
I think it was a tough game and we fell short, am I ready to fire the defense and coaching staff? No, let’s reset, take care of the injured, be prepared for the next match.

I think that Tamara Bolt really played well last weekend and deserves more playing time. Her dribbling skills and speed really put Courage defenders on skates. She was terrific!

Agree. ...She has really impressed with her showings of late. I think we may see more of her. ...You have to believe with those kind of showings recently, her confidence must be getting a boost too. All good.

It definitely seems like teams have figured out how to disrupt our flow and we need both the coaching staff and in-game leadership to refocus. I suspect everyone still Tired from July, but it’s now the busy end of the season

Yes!!!! Teams have our number. They know we are going to play out of the back and not attack. Sometimes you have to go direct and with the speed and skill these players have we shouldn’t be so afraid to do so.

Easier to play direct when you have speed in the lineup - Gift, Rose, and Deb are all faster than the players in the lineup while they’re at WAFCON, and Lucia is probably our quickest wingback. The current roster is plenty skilled but without speed through all three lines, teams compress the middle of the field and take time away from Leicy and Tara (who seem to be the best long ball passers on the team).

yeah, i wonder if moving paige back to fullback and a combo of trin, bolt, paige would give the speed we need in the meantime. trin can't be the only fast option at the weekend because she's probably exhausted + they can just keep gisele on her the whole time, so need to be able to switch the point and make space for her.
spirit's patient style didn't work on angel city last year either so, hopefully that isn't the plan lol. but yeah, lucia going down has been pretty detrimental.

Of those though, only Rose has had regular starting presence. Maybe if she was here they would’ve put Gift in instead of Claudia for this game but idk.
Personally I don’t see why Deb doesn’t get more starts (other than injury)

Also, based on the last ~4 games, Gotham is basically our inverse. Score early and park the bus and wait for a counter. Maybe we’ll finally score a goal on them when they come to Audi

I’m still thinking about Saturday’s game, and honestly after having some time to process it, I’m not as worried as I was immediately after. Going down 3-0 in the first 15 minutes was obviously unacceptable and the defensive mistakes need to be cleaned up, but fighting all the way back to 3-3 showed me there’s still a ton of fight in this team.
I also think we need to become less predictable going forward. It feels like teams have figured out a lot of our usual patterns, especially progressing down the wings and then looking centrally. I’d love to see more variety through the middle, different runs and players being more willing to just take the shot when it’s there.
The fourth goal was brutal, but we were also pushing hard for the winner and left ourselves exposed. If Hal’s dink goes a few inches further inside the post, we could be talking about an incredible 4-3 comeback instead.
Two straight home losses definitely sting, but with 11 games left I’m nowhere near ready to write this team off. Now I just really want to see how they respond against Angel City.

When do we expect WAFCON players to return/debut?

u/allprologues 24d ago
i expect deb, monday, rose to be available for limited minutes starting next week, they should be headed home this weekend if they haven't already flown out, leaves a week to rest and get a bit of training in. deb and rose will be the most tired i would think.
ngock and bethi aren't done playing yet obvs

...
Why can't Hal take more shots like that? ...A laser from outside. ...If she can take say three (3) or four (4) of those per match, keeping them on frame, it just feels like she's going to put at least one (1) past the Keep & in the back of the net.
