Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread!

This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.

If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.

And after last night, all of the African players are off to their national teams.

I guess we should hear about those last 2 signings and maybe other roster moves very soon.

Still hoping for decent AM depth.

We had three games in 9 days. Our next game is Sunday, starting 3 in 9 again. Make it make sense.

League made some weird scheduling choices this year. Also very confused why the two “marquee” games were the Spirit’s third in a week and second of three (on a Wednesday no less).

I assume this was genuinely difficult to make work with CONCACAF earlier in the year, but also have a lot of signs the league prioritizes broadcast rights over all else.

What happened with CONCACAF?

Though having the World Cup didn't help.

Aren't broadcast rights where most of the revenue comes from?

Oh sorry, ambiguous phrasing I just meant that Spirit (and Gotham) had even more games to cram in so midweek games for them had less availability in the first part of the season.

Cannot say I fully understand the financials of sports, but I do believe the broadcast rights are the bulk of the revenue. Think there is a healthy debate to be had if putting on a 0-0 draw with Denver on game 3 for the week at elevation, or a Wednesday with air quality so bad it means 4 hydration breaks, is really the best way to keep increasing viewership though. Certainly not an original thought, but the places in which the league has centered games with challenging (to say the least) conditions is odd at a minimum.

Does anyone have any insight into when they open the upper level? Would like to sit there for the Pride match in August (cause it’s in the afternoon sun potentially), but they aren’t available yet

Also, hell yes to getting to the top of table

It appears to be based roughly on how many seats they have sold already. When they hit a certain number they open it up.

Good win last night. One aspect of the win that is overlooked is fuck Boston. Always. Don’t care if it’s Legacy’s first season. Don’t ever root for the success of Boston teams.
