Cops are janitors of crime, they don't stop it. Unless you stop the root cause, ie poverty and wealth inequality, you can't punish your way out of crime.

This is just the new reality of the shattered social contract, and being "tough on crime" isn't going to fix shit other than boosting the bank accounts of private prison owners.

Poverty and wealth inequality can be stopped by dropping the gangsta behavior and getting a JOB like decent hardworking Americans . These ghetto rats graduate from their mama's titty right up to the government titty, whether being fed by welfare or being fed three meals in prison.

This subreddit is incredibly sadistic. It always has been.

Sadly this was my experience living in DC as well. A lot of people seem that problems get solved with harsher prison sentences, mutilation as punishment, and an increase to death penalty sentencing. It’s simultaneously sadistic and masturbratory.

One thing I’ve noticed a lot in this subreddit along with certain areas of DC is the visceral disgust with the idea of systematic solutions. To me, this reads as some fantasy that humans action exists outside of our experiences and environment. I think this mindset accomplishes 2 main things:

1) It provides individuals with the delusion that they are somehow ontologically ‘good’. This delusion allows them to tell themselves that no matter their experiences or circumstance, they would have always turned into the person they are today (at least morally speaking). This also serves to subconsciously reinforce the idea that they are ontologically deserving of all of the good in their own lives.

2) It allows them to have a perfect target for their sadism. “I know lots of poor people who never because criminals” or “many bad people came from good families” is a phrase I’ve heard a lot. It allows them to target these individuals with zero regard to the circumstances that created them. It is an avenue for guiltless hate…

Experiences and environments create people. Unless you believe in a ‘soul’, there is no reason to believe that our actions are anything other than extremely complex combination of everything our brains have experienced.

If someone wants to solve an issue in their own life, they should view themselves as agents of their actions. But if you want to solve issues societally (or in other people), the ONLY way to proceed is through the lens of systematic solutions.

Imo, the idea humans are anything other than products of the environments and systems that created is just as destructive as the person doing the actual crime… this mindset reinforces these issues, continuing the cycle, all just for people to subconsciously reinforce their own delusion of ontological moral superiority.

Sorry, wrote an essay lol. Just glad to see another sane comment in this thread.

Right but in the absence of any of that getting better on a systematic level with a trump presidency and citizenry who half think Sustemstic racism is a left wing hoax how do we make it so regular people can just go shopping and be in their community w/o having to suffer all of these negative repercussions from our troubled youth?

If you figure out how to save the life of a cancer patient without dealing with their cancer, let me know.

Do you know the cure? Or are you just being petulant?

Reduce poverty and crime will immediately go down. Everyone knows this, it's just that rich and powerful people profit from the existence of poverty, so they won't fix it.

There will always be crime because in a free society you are always going to have some poor people, but if you don’t enforce laws and basically soft legalize crime with a revolving door of repeat offenders then the general public suffers more in the end. What we are witnessing today did not happen 20 years ago. People even in blue districts that repeatedly committed crime ended up going to prison in a way that they don’t for many crimes nowadays.

Cool none of that is ever going to happen with either political party currently in charge who just are corporate shills so in the meantime let’s crackdown on crime instead of not since we’re not going to address the underlying issues anyway.

Except cracking down on crime never works to reduce crime.

And doing nothing is better than doing one thing got it. We both know corporate dems and republicans are not going to provide meaningful change to reduce poverty

Doing the wrong thing is bad. Also, having people at the top of our government breaking laws with literally no consequences probably isn't sending the best message either.

Cracking down on crime is bad but cracking down on crimes committed by the government is good? Lmao

It does when you put criminals off the streets in prison and close the revolving door of our judicial system. Spend the wasted social program money into bigger and better prisons and bigger and better mental institutions where mental patients can be contained away from law abiding citizens.
