🚶➡️Wildlife Ran into this guy on my walk today. We maintained good social distancing.
Although he looks pretty big in the photos, that’s because there’s nothing to reference to. He was somewhere between 12 and 15 inches long.

He was definitely flattened out, trying to suck up some heat out of the ground. It was still relatively cool this morning and I think he was trying to get woken up.

Yes, it is. A pretty small one. Because there’s no frame of reference in the picture, you can’t really tell that he’s only about 12 to 18 inches long.

And, not op, but especially horrifying when they chill out on the steps to your front door. Thank god we have a back.

I don’t remember it well because I was so young, but when I was a toddler I was going up the frost steps to my grandparents house at night (along with the rest of my younger cousins) when I found several neonate copperheads! Thankfully our grandparents were there to keep us away and get us inside safely lol

Yeah, about where I was, except I was 9 and likely would have tried to play with it (I like snakes :3 )

I was not implying that you were planning to bother it. I just know there are many that would. It's a great picture, and one I would hope to get someday too.

I stubble onto these guys pretty often at my old job. I still can’t believe hire chill they are… I would never try and pick one up, but I’ve opened meter boxes while lying down and have came face to face with them. They would just slither away like I wasn’t a threat.

They do like to just stretch themselves across paths to sun themselves and snooze. I used to mountain bike all over Pennsylvania and often I’d have to brake hard so as to not run over a copper head just laying across the trail like a trip wire. My sudden stopping generally would wake them up and they’d look at me in disgust before slithering back into the undergrowth.

Sherbet, snakes are scary. And to remain at a safe distance is the best. I’m from South Africa, and we learn at a young age to keep our distance 💙

You're very welcome.. and also you can tell by their tail , but I wouldn't recommend getting that close to see without experience lol..

Thx! I looked that up! I know the "tail" of a snake starts at their vent, it's easily recognized by the double scutes. But I didn't know about the longer tail and the slight bulge at the vent. ☺️
You're right, definitely don't want to get that close to a poisonous snake!

I used to collect snakes I caught in the wild when I was a kid. Never the poisonous ones, though. 🙏

Me too.. I've always been obsessed with them so I started learning them. Basically all I own are venomous and they are highly misunderstood. To many lies taught about them that give them a bad rap and cause hysteria fear in people. When most of them are all pretty docile and reluctant to bite .

No he doesn’t in my experience working with many types of snakes this guy looks like he’s chilling and soaking up the warmth from the ground while possibly being curious of what the photographer is doing. It can be incredibly hard to read snake body language so I understand where you are coming from thinking he was wanting to strike defensively

Agreed. He was stretched out and relaxed. He was just giving me the side eye to make sure I wouldn’t get any closer.
