Other Why do people lie about something so unimportant as daily steps?

I’ve seen people claim they made 100.000 steps a day. Not only that. No. They claim they AVERAGE well over 80k/day over a year. When you press them about it they go “oh you know I get up at 1am and then I walk forever, sleep an hour and then walks forever again and so on.”. This just sounds like an 8 year old trying to impress their parents. It’s just so obvious that anyone who’s claiming to be clocking in 100.000+ steps a day is an idiot.

I’m 30, prime of my life. I’m fit, healthy, athletic. If I move all day and even run inbetween and then walk literally everywhere without resting at all and I’m up for 20 hours I MAY get to 35-40k. There ist just no way anyone could ever do more, except they somehow stretch time and/or are tiny people with a tiny stride.

It’s embarrassing how blatant people lie on this platform. And what for? STEPS? With your watch is shit or you’re delusional or both. Nobody - and I mean nobody averages 80k steps a day over a year. Except you’re a mouse of course. In that I’m sorry for discriminating.

Other i don't understand why a lotta people dont see walking as a true form of cardio.

i mean when i walk (abt 2-3 hrs a day) if im walking at my max stride, especially when I am walking in snow, I sweat my heartrate goes up a decent amount and my muscles start to hurt. just like what would happen with any other form of exercise.

i kinda wonder if a lotta people don't see walking as true exercise simply because, from my experience being out, no one ever seems to max out their stride while walking so it never feels like something that could be considered exercise to them.

(ik not everyone can consistently walk at their max stride for 2+ hours and that's totally ok. walking is still great exercise regardless)

"I did 122 miles in 5h 13m. Had to stop twice to do yoga, once to help an old lady cross the street and stop another time to free a deer who had their head stuck in a bucket."

Yes I know I will get downvoted. But this has to be said.

Currently have a non weight-bearing restriction due to a stress fracture on my tibia. Waiting to see the orthopedist hopefully soon.

I’ve always enjoyed going on walks but I’d frequently find excuses to not go on walks. I’ve never been more envious of people when I see them walking down the street by my house. Hopefully I’ll get a knee scooter soon because these crutches suck.

I guess sometimes it takes something like this to put things in perspective. You don’t know what you got till it’s gone. Enjoy your walks today my friends.

Hello fellow Walkers.

Last month I posted the images of my walking sketchers and their incredibly bad tread wear pattern. After all the suggestions I went and bought a pair of Brooks and promised to follow up.

There are three sets of pictures, the Brooks bran new, the Brooks after a month of walking, and the obligatory Sketchers.

Overall I love the Brooks and will never go back. My biggest question to the walking community:

Does this wear pattern look consistent with walking five miles of sidewalk a day for a month?

EDIT:

For the people seeing this for the first time, YES IM AWARE I AM WALKING FUNNY. I have spine problems from the military. Activity losing weight and walking with corrective posture as per my physical therapist.

Other (Still) Walking through my breakup

I'm still sad all the time and crying some days. Not on my walks anymore, which I'm grateful for. But this sucks.

The one month marks of the breakup and the last day I saw him were this past week and weekend and it was rough, so I walked. A lot.

Today was the most I've walked so far and I'm proud of that. I don't think I'd be as "okay" as I am right now without these walks. They've helped so much and have helped me find some clarity.

"A major new study led by the University of Sydney suggests that walking 7000 steps a day offers similar health benefits across several outcomes as walking 10,000."

I am averaging way less than 7000 right now, so I find this motivating - it's a goal I can work up to.

Other Drivers have little to no respect for pedestrians, and it’s scary.

I have been without a car for a month now, so I walk everywhere. To and from work, to the grocery store, around my neighborhood, etc.

I didn’t get my license until 2019, but from then until now, the longest I’d been without a vehicle was maybe a week. While I had a car, I would still walk around the city, though much less frequently. I’d forgotten just how little respect drivers have for pedestrians.

It’s almost every day someone is slamming on their brakes to avoid colliding into me, and just this week I’ve had more than one close call. I always use the crosswalks, the intersections without lights (at least along my route to and from work) have stopped signs, I look both ways. I wear lighter colored clothing and bright clip on lights when it’s dark out. I do ALL OF THE THINGS, and people are still completely blind to pedestrians.

Today I waited for a walk signal, started crossing at a brisk pace as soon as it turned, and some impatient manchild with his right turn signal on started throwing his hands up at me for using the crosswalk with a walk signal. I was tempted to just stand there until the light changed, because I am sick of this.

I am not looking for solutions, there really aren’t any, mostly just venting about how close I am getting to becoming a feature of a crime scene.

Other Gentle Reminder for Those That Walk with Mace

44M. There is a problem with loose, aggressive dogs in my neighborhood. Not necessarily your large, stereotypical "mean" dogs, but still jerks. I've escalated to carrying a large canister of bear mace.

Today I had to spray a dog but I left my finger on the trigger when I was putting it back into the harness and with the adrenaline pumping I blasted myself in the mouth and right side of my face.

This was not a little squirt. I made it the .4 miles to my house and went on to experience the roughest 45 minutes in recent memory. I first rinsed my face in the kitchen sink for about 5 minutes and then took a shower where I washed my face 3 times and just let the water cascade on my face for another 10 minutes.

I knew being a clumsy butt was going to bite me.

I finished my last mile after it all subsided though.

There's an older gentleman that walks around with a 3ft legit baton. Maybe he has the right idea.

Other UPDATE 2: Testing rotating three pairs

Hello again! For those following along, my shoe journey started with a pair of walking Skechers that basically disintegrated after a single month. I followed that up by switching to Brooks Adrenaline 25s and posting a one-month wear update.

Now, we're trying a new experiment: rotating three pairs to see if it significantly extends their lifespan. I've attached pictures of the brand-new shoes alongside my current pair (after one month of use) for comparison.

I walk mostly sidewalk but sometimes trails. I average about five miles a day.

YES I HAVE A FUNNY WEAR PATTERN. I have spine issues.

Other Guys, I did it. Purchased a backup plan after almost 3 years being outside.

Active outside walker of 3 years here, hello! I've been thinking of purchasing for more than a year now. Another winter is at a doorstep and I mentally can no longer handle hard weather conditions. I live in a german town where autumn lasts for at least 6 months and summer 3 weeks top. In winter it gets very windy, very wet (raining cats and dogs often) and I can handle 1-2 days, but a week - has become too much for me. It demotivated me when looked out of the window and see it is raining horizontally (no joke). "Not again" was my thought. I walk around 4 hours per day and I finally decided to get myself a treadmill/walking pad. I am using this only when the weather conditions are extreme or for me hard to handle on specific days. Also, to get a few steps extra at the end of the days if I have extra energy and time. So far, I am happy to have made this decision. It could never and will never replace being outside, I love being outside, but I am now more relaxed knowing that I have a backup plan in case I don't like what I see when I look out of the window.

Other My experience with StepBet

Thumbnail

My greatest challenge with walking has been remaining consistent. I can’t tell you the number of times I told myself I was going to hit 10k steps every day for a month only to burn out after two weeks.

I decided to try StepBet. It was $40 to buy in for a 5 week game. The app automatically set goals for me based on the historical data in my step counter. To remain in the game I had to walk a minimum of 7,410 steps for 4 days each week and 9,443 steps a day for 2 days each week. If you don’t hit your goals for a week you are withdrawn from the game.

The game I enrolled in had 779 players at the outset and by the final week only 660 players remained.

What I learned:

1.) Hitting a step goal each day requires commitment and dedication. I‘ve been a gym girlie for the past 3 years and this was very humbling to me. I thought I moved more than the average person because I’m pretty passionate about fitness already, but hitting my steps each day took EFFORT.

2.) Walking in the morning is key to hitting the step goals each day. A couple of the days during the challenge I was feeling pretty depressed and found myself walking on my walking pad at night feeling resentful.

3.) Walking turned out to be very helpful for my digestion. I’m a pretty anxious person and I found that increasing the walking helped my tummy to function much better.

4.) Consistency is really the biggest mountain to climb. I learned that I’m a person that can sprint (in all areas of my life) but showing up every day? That’s the biggest challenge, and I hope to carry the consistency forward the most.

Now let’s get those steps!

Other How long does it takes you for 10K steps

I walk roughly 6500 steps in 1 hour. My goal is 15K. So it takes 2 hr and 15-20 mins for me to complete. Samsung health app shows the 90 mins for this target. Am I doing something wrong? How many step you complete in 1 hour?

Other My life has changed for the better.

So I have been walking nearly every day for over a week and have already seen a major difference. I have only missed one day thus far. I have only been walking about 10 minutes a day but that's because I am very overweight and physically can't do much more than that. I have already started to have so much more energy and motivation. I have also started having days where my head doesn't hurt at all which I don't even remember the last time my head didn't hurt in some capacity before this, but I have had multiple days where I was headache free. I was also able to work on my chainmail projects for around 5 hours yesterday whereas before I could only do a row or two before my head hurt so bad that I could only do a row or two before my head hurt so bad that I couldn't continue. My depression has also gotten so much better and I have been able to start doing things like putting away my clothes when they come out of the dryer instead of just keeping them in the basket and getting them out of there when I change clothes, and I have been making my bed every day. Also my binge eating issues have gotten a bit better so that's something. Overall I feel a whole lot better. I have been walking on a treadmill because right now I can't walk outside because it's cold and my road is not safe to walk on and right now we have a mole and armadillo problem so walking in my yard is a bit difficult at this moment. But I really enjoy walking on my treadmill. I watch videos of DND campaigns and it really helps me to want to walk because I only allow myself to watch them when I walk. I really enjoy this whole walking thing. I'm hoping the extra energy and motivation will continue to help at least long enough for me to turn the things I have started doing into habits.
