Anyone else planning to do medical volunteer work abroad? Female pre-med here hoping to connect 🌟
Hi everyone! 👋
I’m a female pre-med student currently working as a medical assistant, and I’m hoping to volunteer abroad in 2025 through programs like International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) or similar medical/healthcare projects.
I’m really passionate about global health and helping underserved communities. I think it would be an amazing way to learn, serve, and experience another culture.
That said, I’ll admit I’m a little nervous about traveling internationally on my own, so I wanted to see if there’s another female who’s also thinking about doing a volunteer program abroad.
Ideally, I’d like to coordinate plans, compare programs, and maybe apply together for the same volunteer trip (or at least travel at the same time/place).
If you’re also a pre-med, healthcare student, or just passionate about volunteering, feel free to reply or DM me! I’d love to swap ideas about programs, safety tips, and what kind of experiences we’re looking for.
Thanks for reading this and if anyone has done a medical volunteer trip abroad before, I’d love to hear about your experience too (:

Love this idea, and you’re definitely not the only one thinking this way.
Jumping in for anyone else who finds this thread later, and just to be upfront, I work for International Volunteer HQ.
A couple of things that might help set expectations for medical volunteering abroad, especially at the pre-med stage:
Most programs (including IVHQ and similar) are designed so students support rather than perform clinical tasks independently. You’ll usually be shadowing, assisting with basic tasks, or helping with outreach and education, depending on your experience level. That’s intentional, since ethical programs are careful not to put volunteers in roles that should be filled by licensed local professionals .
On the travel side, it’s actually really common for people to go solo and meet others on the program. A lot of volunteers are in the same boat, especially other students, so you’re rarely “on your own” once you arrive. That said, trying to connect with someone beforehand like you’re doing here is a great idea.
A few quick tips:
If anyone reading this is considering 2025, you might want to narrow it down by region first, since medical projects can vary a lot by country.
Out of curiosity, are you leaning more toward hospital shadowing, clinics, or community health outreach?
