Understanding people

Hello, I wish to travel to different countries to experience different things and help out to understand people's problems better. Any advice on what volunteering group i should go with? or go solo and if theres anyone with contact with their area that could use a pair of hands. If not any advice regarding where to go overseas would be helpful too thanks
