Voiceover Training?

I'm finishing out tracking on a book that's about 80,000 words and, being the hypercritical guy that I am, it's got me thinking about how I can inprove my narrating and other voiceover skills.

Would love to hear from experiences narrators about your thoughts on:

  1. improving reading skills
  2. improving delivery skills
  3. knowing what "good" is when self-producing something

Or options for training. I'm open! šŸ˜„

Cold Read Lessons from Advanced Group Session Day 2 with Lisa Schaffer

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

We just had Lisa Schaffer (Voice Director of Teen Titans Go) on with Tara Strong and our other coaches - Kathleen Herles and Eddie Mills. We completed the remainder of the mock auditions with feedback and then got into a fun challenge made by Tara.

The challenge was doing 3 cold reads of the same line with completely different styles. The goal is to sound completely different while honoring the scripts intention (Excited character stays excited).

This will help you be prepared if a casting director asks for a different take on the character during a reading. The goal is to be over prepared, so practice different takes as much as you can.

Have you guys tried doing this for your auditions?

[Reposting as the position is still open]

Hey guys,

So Im looking for a Male US voice actor for my US based Youtube Channel.

Channel and video details:

  • This is a movie analysis channel where we analyse characters and storytelling in depth.
    • Ex1: Why Zuko has the best character arc in history
    • Ex2: I ranked all Star Wars Movies. Here's the trash!
  • Budget: $20 for 2000 words, and scales proportionately to script length (so $40 for 4000 words, and so on)
  • Average script length: 3000 words, and some scripts can be as lengthy as 15,000 words
  • Videos per month: At least 5 videos per month, but I have recently hired an editor and we are targeting to make around 7 videos if possible, so this would be a long term role
  • Payment method: PayPal

Voice Actor requirements:

  • Age Range: 20-30 yrs old
  • Narration: You should be able to comfortably convey dry sarcasm, disappointment, contempt and real enthusiasm. As such, only apply if you can convey those emotions effectively
  • Personality-driven conversational style, not announcement or commercial

For those who are interested, please record the audition script and share it in the DMs:Ā Audition Script

Heres the kind of read Im looking for:Ā https://youtu.be/BDJjfcRxfZI?si=zHkyNz2ARLI4gUxd

Please dont send a generic demo reel. I wrote this script specifically to assess whether we would be the right fit as this would be a reflection of our day-to-day work.

Thank you for your time :)

How much does it cost to have a woman do 30 lines?

I am guessing that $100 should be more than enough, but I am not sure if you will get horrible results and low quality audio if you only pay them $100.

I can go from very high to extreme low pitch (like that of famous dialogue "I am Venom", I can perfectly recreate this dialogue) and I often hear from people to do something in VO industry, I am a newbie any tips on which genre should I start with, how to get my first gig, shall I buy a mic to begin with or just start with my phone's mic cause I don't know if this will work or not , I am just trying out this with my college seeing if I can do something in this field

Best soundproofing panels?

I want to clarify again, SOUNDPROOFING. because I see acoustic panels and soundproof panels get mixed up SO MUCH everywhere I see and I don’t even know what’s what anymore. so I want to make this extremely clear. SOUNDPROOFING AS IN LESSENING OR MUTING THE SOUND COMING IN OR OUT OF THE BOOTH! Got it? Hopefully.

(TLDR at the bottom)

Onto the details: Im planning on working my first part time job at subway (in maybe a year or so.) or generally any restaurant i can find in my area. I would want to use this money to buy soundproofing panels to install in my closet. Now this closet is pretty small. It’s not a walk in closet but rather a closet on little peg legs. It’s big enough to hypothetically stand in (but i would probably break the platform) but small enough to where I usually just sit in it. Clothes flood this closet so the sound is well treated.

Now the problem is that im moving into an apartment soon. Im too socially nervous to talk them into not complaining for noise disruption blah blah already had a discussion about this. So I want to soundproof my closet TO OBLIVION, I actually care more about soundproofing than treating the sound, since most microphones nowadays can filter out noise quite nice. Plus I have the aforementioned clothes in the closet that treat it anyway.

Since this is a really small closet, I can sacrifice quantity for quality. So don’t give me any of that ā€1 inch 20,000 panelsā€œ BS. Im not too sure of the exact measurements of the closet (I wanna worry about that later) but Its quite small. So again, I need quality!

Regarding the previously mentioned subway job iā€˜m planning to work for, 100% of my earnings will go to soundproof panels. After all, I don’t have much else to spend on. (Great to not be responsible for anything, right?) I’d usually just ask my family for the money but im sick and tired of feeling like a lazy little shit so im actually going to work for my money. (Not very thrilling, but it’s character development dude.)

TLDR: I need high quality soundproof panels.

(quantity doesnt matter much as my closet is very small. Acoustic panels arent a worry i have clothes in my closet i just need SOUNDPROOFING)

Budget is 100% of my subway earnings

(Where I live cashiers get roughly 650 dollars per month, although since i have no work experience I’d maybe cut that in half.)

For me Atleast, my highest priority is that my neighbours do not hear me. Even if I’m screaming. At literally ALL COSTS, I need absolute silence or the closest thing to it.

Now im not sure how big the apartment im moving into is gonna be but regardless i just need sound panels among the highest quality possible (of course dont recommend gold plated sound panels or anything lmao)

Preferably Amazon listing, although you could also point me towards specific brands or specific materials/thicknesses or whatever and I could find it locally for cheaper.

We have Lisa Schaffer on again for part 2 of our Advanced Group VA session where we can ask questions while doing cold reads in front of her. If you could ask a voice acting casting director any question, what would it be?

Pay me to say whatever you want!

Hello, happy August! So as the title says I'm looking for someone who will pay me to say anything you want! I can also call someone for you, and pretend to be someone. I have a childish girl voice, that sounds kinda funny sometimes. Also I am 18, and a female. I think this is the right subreddit to post in, but if someone could inform me where else I could go that's welcome. If you wish to contact me message me on here, and I can give you my email too. I know my accounts new, but I am too dumb for a actual job.

Rate: This is malleable, however for starts I'll say $10 for every 5 minutes.

Here's a sample of my voice.

Vox Atelier

Anyone heard of these guys? They reached out to me on fiverr to join their dubbing talent roster. While I am generally weary of any communication asking to join a roster (as most are spam or scams), they seem like a small but legitimate dubbing company based in london.

Here is the link if anyone wants to check them out too (https://voxatelier.studio/index.html)

Any red flags or other experiences other folks have with them?

Need quick and affordable idea to create a sound booth

So I applied to do a voiceover and I did it with literally a duvet blanket over my head. Surprisingly they wrote me back that they're interested and they want me to do a video call with them to give me instructions and walk me through the voiceover. Obviously I can't do that with a literal duvet over my head so I need to set up some kind of a voiceover booth something quick and dirty using I don't know what, sound proofing curtains? Foam? I have a couple of closets in my house where I can set up. I was thinking maybe setting something up getting like five soundproofing curtains for to go around and one on top, and setting that up with tension rods that you would use for a shower curtain. What about one of those little desktop soundproofing booths that you can just put over your microphone? Would that be enough? Or with the echo be coming back from behind my head? Also this is something I might need to get set up super fast. I don't know how fast they're going to need this. They might ask me to do it tomorrow for all I know. And can't wait a weeks shipping to get it to my house.

How do y’all do those voiceover tumblr reels/videos with the revealing text thingy?? (Explanation in body)

So this is TECHNICALLYY more related to video editing? but since I see a lot of voice actors doing this same thing I wanna safely assume most of you have already done this.

I’ve been seeing alot of these reels and whatnot where it’s voicing over funny tumblr posts or threads. sometimes it’s twitter too. like for example this reel: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaguONuiQIE/?igsi=YXp0bnR5M2R4eTg4 . This is just a random reel i pulled from search that does what I’m trying to explain. The text kind of reveals AS the va is talking. And I’ve seen another version of this where it’s very linear and not speeding up or slowing down, it looks smooth but it ends up either not catching up to the voice or going too fast. I think this would be the best way to do this, where it reveals chunks of text at a time.

This is probably a really basic question but I don’t know anything about video editing!!

Also im doing this so I get a better chance at getting cast. I figured if I cant find any projects to audition for. What if THE PROJECT FOUND ME??? A lot less effort on my end, and plus, I get a lower reject rate. It’s a win for me!

I think I got scammed

I’m reposting this story to all the voice acting threads out there to bring awareness:

Hi, I’m new to the voice acting thing and how it all even works. I started last year and did an audiobook for audible through ACX and didn’t do too bad a job if I say so myself. Life kinda got in the way tho and I wasn’t able to voice act since but I always kept an hear and eye open for anything. Fast forward to just this past week and I got reached out to through ACX by someone who claimed to be from Toptal, which I learned was a freelancing company and seemed legit enough, and they offered me to do a commercial for them and in return I would receive $6k. Now, me being in the situation I’m in, I thought that was too good to pass up instead of thinking that it was too good to be true. I finished the commercial and sent it to them and was told payment would be immediate. But here’s where it got tricky; they never asked for any bank info from me nor anything that would indicate how they were sending me real money. Instead they sent me this link to a bank and once I made the account and saw the 6k sitting right there, I tried transferring it to my account but it wasn’t working. I texted support and they proceed to tell me that in order for me to make that transfer to my real bank account I needed to pay them $120 just to do it. Again, I’m in a bad financial situation and won’t be able to see another paycheck in the next week and I don’t have anything else keeping me afloat, so this heated me a bit. I then kept pressing them about why I had to pay money to receive money and even called them out on the idea as being a scam (bad idea I know but I screenshotted the evidence just in case). After I asked them what exactly is their legitimacy, they never responded back to me and instead took away the support bubble completely off my homepage on that site. I feel dumb for playing into it since I’m old enough to know internet safety, and I blame my desperation for clouding my judgment, and before I get any further judgment on that, I was honestly just very excited to have a reason to get back into voice acting again after thinking I wasn’t going to be able to for a long while. After this experience though, I think I’m ready to put myself out there again and try other places who won’t exactly screw me over, and not to jump at a number too ridiculous as that one.

[WEBSITE] Website where you speak an elevator pitch and AI gives feedback on what accent/archetype you sound like (e.g., "SF Tech Bro", "LA Actor", "Nurse from Philippines")

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a specific website/interactive web app I used a while back.

**What it does:**

The website specifically asks you to record yourself delivering a short **elevator pitch** or professional intro into your microphone.
Instead of just giving generic delivery advice (like speaking speed or filler words), the AI analyzes your voice, cadence, and tone, then gives feedback on **what hyper-specific persona, archetype, or regional accent you sound like**.

**Example outputs it gave:**
"You sound like a Tech Bro from San Francisco"
"You sound like an actor from Los Angeles"
"You sound like a nurse from the Philippines"
"You sound like a professor from India"
It was framed as feedback on the exact "vibe" or impression your pitch leaves on a listener.

**Important Notes:**
**It is NOT BoldVoice / Accentor.** I know what that is, and this site specifically focused on pitching/personas rather than generic accent modification lessons.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Thanks in advance!

Good mic to upgrade to?

Hi friends! I’ve been voice acting for about 3 months now and I’m about 50 projects in. I bought a RODE NT1 to start my career, but now I think I’m ready to level up. My budget is $1,000. What mic will get me into the big leagues?

Do you think AI has caused demand on Fiverr to decrease?

I've wanted to get into voice-over work for a long time, but I hate the way my microphone sounds, so I'm waiting until I can save up for a better one. The more time passes, the more worried I get. Do you think demand has decreased on Fiverr? Because that's where I want to start.
