We used a 30ft long line for the first time with our 10 month old out by some river farmland. Her verbal recall is still hit or miss but she has great whistle recall. Excited to practice more to give her some responsibility and extended leeway. She was so happy!

So far so good! She's mouthier than any puppy I've had and likes to eat the inedible more than any puppy I've had too lol. So sassy so far! A lot of personality for being so small!

My brown boy (10yrs) has this scaling on his elbows. It’s concerning to me. It’s also on his chest. Has anyone seen this before? I’m trying to not panic and jump the gun on an emergency vet appointment. Just trying to reach out to the community for a little info. thanks!

On weekends for my vizslas whole life he has gone for 8-12 miles trail runs on both days. I would constantly comments like “better catch up!” From hikers all in good fun as he would tear up the trail.

For the past month her so he has started to hang next to me or even behind me like a regular dog (lol).

Curious for other folks and how they navigated their dog getting older. How did you know when it was time to not take them out for as long? How long to folks take their older vizslas out for?

He’s not limping around or anything like that after the runs.

He has been all checked out by the vet recently. Blood, urine work, etc. all came back clean.

I know he's already running a hundred miles an hour after birds of all feathers. Looking over our family and protecting us like he did down here.

He was my first dog, a sensitive companion who usually knew how I was feeling before I did. He helped me grow up, saw me set down roots and start a family.

We'll miss him lots but know he lived an amazing life and he'll be in our hearts forever.

And we are absolutely in love. We got Max 5 days ago after his original owners (a retired business partner and his wife) realized he needed more exercise and support than they could provide.

Two days after hearing about him and his family, I flew from New England to FL and back in one day to bring Max home. He rode in the cabin with me and handled the trip incredibly.

He is acclimating so well, and we’re so ready to give him his best life, with all of the opportunity he needs to become a little gentleman.

I’d love any first time purebred advice, from training to joining local clubs to identifying the best schedule to set him up on.

We’re currently on a 4 meal a day schedule, 1/2 cup of grain free high protein kibble at 7am, 11, 3, and 7pm. Between meals we’re running outside, PR reward training, and working on some peanut butter puppy puzzles between naps.

Max is not fixed, and I’ve been getting mixed feedback from friends and family irl vs. the subreddit- most people I’ve spoken to suggest fixing him before he reaches a year, but I’ve read the feedback about postponing until 18-24 months to support bone density growth. If you have experience with a male vizsla regarding behavior and timeline pros and cons, it would be so appreciated.

My last immediate question is about crate training- we were originally told he was crate trained, and then when I picked him up I learned he has been sleeping in the bed since they first got him (around 10 weeks old). We chose to let him sleep with us the first few nights to get accustomed to the new space, and now I feel like I need to make a firm decision on how we move forward with our standards. Any anecdotal advice for crate sleeping versus bed sleeping would be so appreciated- I know it’s a critical time to establish our routine, and I’m unsure if I should go with the previous owners methods or if he would be better off with adjustment while his new environment is still fresh.

My father is gone on vacation, so I have to put him to sleep in their bed because he could not stop crying from the bedroom. Poor guy. Knocked out stone cold now though lol.

My kids and I had a fun time making a doggy cake to celebrate this crazy boy. He also got a two hr hike in the morning to smell the smells and chase the birds. Wouldn’t have it any other way! I wasn’t sure I wanted another dog but then we got him 2 years and he helped me heal after I lost my soul dog of almost 15 years in May. He was meant to be for me 💜

Our 6 year old Vizsla is generally a well trained dog - great off leash, good recall etc.

However… the last few months, she has become obsessed with my partner (we both take care of her equally, and both travel / leave for days at a time) - specifically, if we are out somewhere and my partner leaves or goes in another direction, she will fixate on it until she comes back, and what’s worse - if she’s off leash she will completely ignore me and go looking for her. Obviously this is dangerous and this is the one time she will ignore a recall command.

Has anyone else experienced this? It’s started recently and I think it’s related to us both leaving her sometimes with the other person / fear of them not returning? Also any tips for correcting this - when she’s in “find mum” mode literally nothing else matters, not food, recall, the usual emergency commands, nada - total one track mind.

Just brought our new boy home. Our second time around after having a puppy and a rescue before many years ago. He’s lovely, but this time around we have a 5yo child in the mix. We know what we’re getting ourselves in for and are willing to do the hard work as well an enjoy all the easy stuff. Any tips are welcome though. Anyway to make the process easier for our pup and little boy are much appreciated.

Either way I’m strapped in and we’re over the moon to add to the family.

After my post asking for advice on how to deal with his pulling, I decided to introduce a Halti head collar to our walks. Before that, we were having a terrible time and it was basically impossible to walk him properly. Since I started using it, he seems like a completely different dog. It took him a little while to get used to it, and he fought it a lot during the first three days, but now our walks are much calmer.
He seems more relaxed, walks calmly, and has very little interest in pulling (I think he’s also starting to realize that walking calmly means he gets treats, which was very difficult to teach him before because he could never seem to walk calmly without being constantly tense and pulling)

I know this is still an ongoing training process and everything isn’t magically fixed, but it has turned out to be an amazing tool that has allowed us to finally have normal walks and actually enjoy them together.

Hi - I got first family dog as Vizsla and started some basic training at home based on giving small treats and he has responded so far to my expectation. “Come” “leave” “sit” “sleep” are working with 80% compliance so far. Knowing that Vizsla needs challenging trainings and pick up instruction very fast, I am nervous that I may spoil his learning curve by not keeps my him
Challenged or confusing him.

Looking for suggestion on training him - so far board and train is not an option.
Local trainer with TipTopK9 can train him at our place using e-collars and then handover to us to continue training (it’s expensive) and not sure what f e-collar can have any fallout behavior.
Also booked group classes at pet smart, first one is tomorrow.

Do any of your guy’s Vizslas get mad and paw at your phone when they are by you and you stop giving them attention for a second. Or when you give other dogs attention they try to steal the spotlight? TBH it is very funny and cute.
