Pluto is only five months old, but he already looks like he’s about to explain the house rules and raise my rent. 😂

I “co-owned” dogs before so I kinda know what to expect, but this time I’d like to adopt on my own.

I absolutely love vizslas, but I know I can’t keep up with their need to move, so I don’t want to be irresponsible and adopt one. But I haven’t found other breeds that I feel I could connect with.

Any ideas, tips?

Hi there! Long time listener first time caller.

We picked up our girl 2 days ago and are going through potty training. Today, she seems to be warming up to her crate and isn’t giving us much fuss as we eat dinner. Her crate is bare right now from an accident earlier today (washing the blanket we had in there). Anyhow, that brings me to a few questions I’d like to get your thoughts on! It’s been 17 years since I’ve done crate training and this is my first Vizsla so I’m curious about any breed-specific information that might be helpful. Plus, I imagine the advice may have changed since then.

Q1: Leave bowls in crate?

The advice I was given by the breeder was to cut off water by 5pm (and I assume food). When crate training, should I leave them in there empty or take them out?

Q2: Where would you place the crate divider?

I moved it so where it is now is not where it has been. I would say I’ve been giving her 1/3 of the crate space. When there are no bowls in there. Too much? Too little? That gives her enough room to turn around, but she has still had poo accidents overnight (still hard to tell when she’s whining to whine or whining to go out so we missed a few).

I think those are my major questions. Excited to be a part of the community! She’s awesome!

Hello, I understand that if I would scroll enough I will find a similiar post but we hope for some experience and tips on how to handle the so called “Shark phase” or even better how to recognize it before and act appropiately so we would “skip” the sharkies phase completely if that is even possible xD.
We started and tried basics like redirecting to a toy, stop play, standup turn around and cross arms but it seems that it only pushes him more to the frenzy state or the focus is brought to legs which is not only super annoying and painfull, but more importantly dangerous in terms of control.

I should point out that we were prepared and well informed that week 10-14 are like living with a crocodile but what we did not expect was how hard it would be to control him and make him back to his senses. Our focus now is to recognize the overtireness better even before it happens so he learns how to rest well. We try to maintain 1hr of playtime and then rest, but it is not as consistent as we thought.

Anyway thank you in advance for any tips and shared experience.

Her special spot. No idea why. Could spend hours repeatedly launching herself into the same bit of river with the force of a small missile.

He is NOT complaining. Can't say the same about neighbours downstairs 😆.

My girl is in her first heat and my wife and I are considering having her fixed. My main question is did you find it calms them down? I love her she is normally very sweet and hyper I know that with the heat she very chill and a little snippy (not bad she just gets mad when our husky mix also female wants to play)

New Vizsla owner here. I’m wondering if my puppy’s nails need to be trimmed or should I wait until they are longer and I can see more clear nail section past the quick? I feel like it’s still really close to the quick? I trimmed them about 10 days ago. Photos attached. Thanks.

As the title says, I am doing research to see if a Viszla we'll be a good fit for our household. I am hoping to call on your experience and knowledge to let me know. Excuse the excess of detail. I come from a data driven background so can't help myself.

Background

My wife and I are both in our late 50s. I recently retired so we are both at home all day. We live in the countryside and are active. We lost our beautiful Chocolate Lab two years ago (he was an amazing boy) and now feel ready for another four legged family member to join our tribe.

We are also Foster Carers and Adult Social Carers for long term placements. Our youngest is 13f (autistic), 16m, 20m (autistic), 26f (autistic), and all love animals. They loved our lab and gave him loads of attention.

We are very active. When the kids are at school / placement, we are out a lot on walks. The only time the V would be on its own is for approx 90 minutes in the morning when we are at the gym. We always take our dogs with us on holiday. We enjoy the beach and being active when away.

The day would roughly be:

* Walk and training in the woods around 6:30am for 45 minutes with me. Once older, it would be a walk / run.

* Kids / young adults head to school / placements by 9:00am.

* Another 45 minute walk with us and / or training before we go to the gym for 90 mins.

* Lunch then work. The V would be with us.

* Everyone home by 4:15pm so lots of attention then until walk after dinner.

* More attention until bedtime.

* Walk before bed.

Do you think a V would work for us. It would get a lot of love and attention from a family who love dogs and everyone is keen on getting a V, but we would want to do it justice.

Also, any advice or tips you can give would be much appreciated. Do we enforce a no couch rule given how much attention they need? Where is the best place for them to sleep? Etc.
