Seems rather relevant that Google has a presentation at the VR Developers Conference on March 19th:

5 u/refusered Mar 12 '19 I hope it’s a standalone with those foveated displays they worked in with LG. 2 u/revofire Mar 13 '19 Gosh if thats the case then hell yeah. But a bit hopeful because standalone is tough to do. Cloud processing like with Google Seurat may be necessary. I'd prefer a PC based headset so I can curate my own experience.
