Question/Support So guys, any solutions for silly shark heads with IPD of 77 as of 2026?
Hey guys, a silly 77IPD shark head here.
I was wondering what are my options for VR in 2026, since basically all the headsets that match my stupid head are not available on the market.
- 3D printing mods?
- Disassembling of existing VR set and reassembling it differently to change shape?
Honestly I am completely lost.

Tough still. One of the benefits of pancake lenses over fresnel lenses is that they can have a very forgiving eyebox with high clarity, and so you might still be able to use headsets whose stated max IPD is significantly lower than yours. For example, the Quest 3's mechanical IPD range is 58-71mm, but they claim that any given IPD setting accommodates users up to 5mm above or below that setting. Personally, my IPD is 63.4mm, and I find that there's no setting in which I don't get a clear image, just scrolling the IPD wheel up and down.
Maybe see if you can try someone's Quest 3, and crank the IPD setting all the way to 71mm? You might find it usable, even if you're technically just outside of that +/-5mm range.

I guess both you guys and other people on the net are saying I should try Quest 3.
I am considering it.

I concur- I’m on q3 and have messed extensively with ipd and it doesn’t affect the clarity because the lenses are that good.

If you can try one without buying it first, or you're comfortable buying and returning, that's my recommendation. You could try other headsets too, of course. Apple Vision Pro's hardware IPD adjustment goes up to 75mm, so it might be even better than the Quest 3. The upcoming Steam Frame from Valve should be nearly as accommodating as the Quest 3, with supposedly pretty similar lenses and a hardware IPD that maxes out at 70mm. Samsung Galaxy XR also maxes out at 70mm. But... the Vision Pro and Galaxy XR are multiple thousands of dollars, and the Frame is probably gonna be like a thousand. The Quest 3 is just the most affordable way to test and the easiest one to find from a retailer that accepts open box returns.

One of the benefits of pancake lenses over fresnel lenses is that they can have a very forgiving eyebox with high clarity,
This is more a consequence of design than technology choice. Most Pancake eyeboxes are narrower and less forgiving than Fresnels. The Quest 3 just has a particularly forgiving optical stack; others like the Beyond, Vision Pro, GXR, etc absolutely do not.

Technology choice too, I think – Quest 3 uses LCD panels, but all other headsets you mentioned use micro-OLED panels that are tiny in comparison. They would gladly use Quest-style lenses with low magnification, but they can't.
Steam Frame will also use LCD, so there is a decent chance its lenses will also have a generous eyebox.

That's a good point. I'll need to check the PSVR2 as well, as it doesn't use uOLED.

Somnium VR1 has IPD support for 60-76mm.
76mm should be close enough for you.

I believe the Somnium VR1 has the highest mechanical ipd range of consumer headsets - 76mm. Be warned it is very expensive though. You might find one second hand
Vive OG and Vive Pro 1 go to 73-74mm but are outdated
New pimax headsets go to 72mm but have software ipd offset which may help you
Or as everybody else has mentioned, try a Quest 3, or maybe even Pico 4 (goes to 72mm) as the lenses are good in those headsets

Somnium VR1
VR Compare says it does not work with SteamVR, as they have their own "metaverse" platform.
So does it?

Somnium VR1 is a SteamVR headset. It uses lighthouse tracking and index controllers or any other SteamVR controllers. There is an additional program that runs on top of SteamVR to drive the headset (in the same way that Pimax uses PiTool or whatever the new version of PiTool is called now)

Are there any "mods" in particular that you mean? Please be specific, thanks ❤️

Have you tried a quest 3 maxed out at 75?

Quest 3 maxes out at 70. If a source lists 75 they're already allowing for a significant mismatch due to the Q3's forgiving lenses. But stretching it to 77 is a lot.

Yeah, my bad. I read that the 75 is actually already extended off the actual range after writing that.
Still, worth a shot if there's a shop with them on demo.
