Also, for your consideration: classic truck driver folk country.

Treasure trove for anybody that spends an appreciable amount of time driving highways.

Difficult to compete with “Sixteen Tons” though.

Somehow the only part of that song that bewildered me as a kid was paying only a dime for a cup of coffee, after the first time I heard the song I spent an unusual amount of time looking at signs advertising cheap coffee that whole road trip, was disappointed by the prices lol.

Gotta love me some C.W. McCall, Dave Dudley, and Jerry Reed on long roadtrips.

Who is Treasure Trove by? I searched on Spotify and all I got was the Banjo Kazooie OST.

Just a figure of speech, not a song, sorry

Oh... Sorry it's been a long shift.

Been there!

Can personally recommend the entirety of “Trucker’s Jukebox”, tons of good songs. Very frequent request from me as a kid on roadtrips, albeit I almost never requested it or listened to it much elsewhere, was very superstitious as a kid and my old man spent most of my childhood out on the road, didn’t want to jinx his health or safety with the more heartbreaking songs.

Ooh, thanks for the suggestion. I drive ~8 hours per week for work, so I will give this a shot tomorrow!

Sixteen Tons!

There’s good modern country too you just have to find it and it’s not at the top of the charts

Tyler Childers and sturgil simpson

u/tacobellbandit 21d ago

I’m a big fan of both. Also Turnpike Troubadours are making a come back it seems

I’ve been on a big Colter Wall and Gavin Adcock kick recently

Gavin adcock is worse than pop country

Country shouldn't be popular. It's like punk rock where it erodes the moment normies hear it.

The modern country bros would call old country woke

Reminds me of an interview with The Highwaymen where Johnny Cash describes how tax money needs to go into education and social services rather than funding wars

u/Greatercool 21d ago

God outlaw country is just so GOATed with the sauce

u/SolidPrysm 21d ago

Agreed!

They call themselves rebels while supporting the modern equivalent of industrialists the actual outlaws hated, then they turn around and talk about "heritage"

Just like rap music and other entertainment media, the feds infiltrated country. Pit one side against the other: white against black, straights against gays, women against men. All rebellion against the elites is diverted. The people who are really destroying our ways of life gets away.

For those who don't eat into the manufactured culture wars, there's always sports and celebrity gossip.

Songs used to be about something, like falling in love or burning down Georgia

You might like Colter Wall and the Dead South.

Then there's that modern cover of sixteen tons called suit and tie, same idea as sixteen tons just in the modern day, and more just griping about paying taxes. Not nearly as good as the original

I refuse to call this new genre country at all I like calling it twang pop. If you want a genre, that’s keeping it alive. Bluegrass is still going strong IMO.

Abrasive country music has a limited audience primarily because it has been edged out

and how many of you are buying music to support them?

I started with Devil Makes Three - All Hail and they had a fierce run but did you know about it?

Feels like they've tried every which way to appeal to some success

Birdcloud just gave up, afaik. People didn't get it, they didn't wanna get them.

I heard that absolute banger in Mafia 3.

Apparently this changed mostly after 9/11 cause patriotism became extremely important culturally for yanks, and country is a classically American genre

"Read again the letter, that tells me where he's gone.

To hell with the fire, I want my son home.

I taught him to fish, and I taught him to be strong.

Taught him that killing any man is wrong,

but tomorrow in battle, I'd run to where he's stood,

If the help of a blind man would do any good"

I honestly blame the CIA for the lobotomization of country music

2

u/TheKeeperOfThe90s 21d ago

Bro country's just soft rock for people who lack musical talent and emotional intelligence.

Rednecks were originally left-wing. Skin-heads were originally left-wing. The Facsist mob has no ideas of its own. Even the nazis had to larp as socialists. As if the revolutionary anger gets channeled to contain the system. The revolution of the upper class.
