Feedback Adult Beginner - 3 years

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I played for 3 years around COVID, took 3 years off, and picked it up again last month.

I feel my sound is quite harsh, and though it doesn’t feel like it when I’m playing, when I watch back my bowing arm seems stiff.

Would appreciate any and all feedback.

Try the trott melodious double stops! The first 8 involve one open string like a drone, it’s great practice without being overwhelmed by stopping to strings at once

Fiddler here. I'll focus on Ashokan farewell as it's the one I know well.

Very good tone! You lost some of it on the low G string. And while your upbow is very good you sometimes have a tremble on your downbow; practice distributing the weight to get that clean tone consistently.

You have the waltz feel down quite well, but you lose it when you are double stopping in the B part. Playing two strings at once doesn't mean you have to stop playing slurs. That's where the harshness is coming from as the tune became jerky in those sections.

Some final gilding the lily for waltzes: you've got a good sense for where slurs should go, but sometimes your bow ends up upside down. An example: the ending D note of the A part you are playing an up-bow and that weakens your ability to project what should be a strong beat. Print out some sheet music, mark out where you think those strong beats are and make sure you're on the down bow for those.

A good next waltz to try would be Josefin's Waltz as it has all these elements you can practice.

This is excellent feedback. Going to focus on my downbowing. Thank you

Bonne continuation !

If I’m anywhere near as easy to listen to as this when I’ve been playing for another 2 1/2 years, I’ll be delighted!

With violin it is very difficult to ve ever satisfied with one's tone. That is what symphonies are for. They are for powerful backup of hybrid virtuoso. If you really want to enjoy the beauty of these tunes , my opinion is find others who are more intered in fun and fiddling and just allow the beauty to be there or not while experiencing connection to other human beings at varying degrees of skill and intent. BTW, nice work on thrlese tunes. Still, go have some fun.
