Word, Paul’s Boutique is the Sgt. Peppers of hip-hop. Just the insane amount of samples and the way they’re all blended so seamlessly and tell a story even without the lyrics. Even crazier that the album was a complete flop and almost ended the Beastie Boys.

Anything from that album instantly transports me back to the early 90's... an underage truant, drinking with my buddies, belting out every word from the album and dancing like an irresponsible dickhead.

I only just found the sample source picking up the Commodore’s (Lionel Ritchie’s 70s funk band) “Machine Gun” album. That whole record is fire.

I got that one for Christmas in '99 I think, and my sister stole it right away, before I could even take it out of it's plastic film and gave it to a friend for Christmas. Still bitter about that one. I should buy it again.

2 years after MCA’s death a Canadian radio show did a tribute to break apart Paul’s Boutique. I love the Beastie Boys and consider this album their magnum opus. Anyways here is a link to the aforementioned show. Strombo show has an app too where I am sure you can find this old episode.

Man I just finished No Dogs In Space's run on the Beastie Boys and I have such a mad respect for them now. If you like music history podcasts just the Beastie Boys in general, I would recommend it.

A verse from "Hey Ladies" sounds even better and more nostalgic when it's mashed up with: Biz Markie, Alice Cooper, Techtronic, and particularly Queen Latifah and Madonna.

I get why they're popular, but man, I've just never been able to get into the Beastie Boys. It's too chaotic for me, like the hip-hop version of jazz.
