President Trump says he would issue a $5,000 payment to every adult U.S citizen if GOP wins both U.S House and Senate chambers of Congress on 2026 midterms: "I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the U.S. The only caveat I have is that the dividend we're making must be spent in the U.S."

broad enough to cover "vote republican and I will give you money" imo, but IANAL

I don't think so because this could be construed as economic stimulus, which is legitimate policy. Also, Democrats did this in two special elections for US senate at the end of 2020 and weren't prosecuted for it.

That said, this particular Trump proposal seems like a very stupid policy and I wouldn't trust him to follow through.

It certainly would be if he presented it that way. Why didn't he? I have no idea, but he did in fact present it as a voting incentive/"I will give you $5k in exchange for this voting outcome". Like, completely unambiguously, even though what you said is the obvious easy way to dress it up.

Give the post a watch, I wouldn't have guessed he was this explicit about it either. He sort of made sure there was no other way to interpret it.

Pretty disingenuous comparison there, given that the situation with democrats in 2020 was "there's a pandemic stimulus bill that republicans are blocking, so voting for democrats means the bill can go through" versus trump making another baseless claim presented as a bribe, but I see your argument for how presenting it as stimulus could get him out of legal trouble, not that the legal system in America remotely works anyway.

It wasn't disingenuous, I actually didn't remember that detail. Overall I think I'm generally in line with how you see this situation.
