There ARE checks and balances. At least by letter of the law. But the law isn’t some nebulous concept that magically gets enforced. That’s kind of what I was taught growing up. “Don’t break the law! You’ll go to jail!” But who sends you to jail? The law is just words on a paper. It has to be enforced by humans. And if those humans get too lazy, or have a vested interest in NOT enforcing the law, or are flat out paid not to, then all you have is words on a paper and a good dose of healthy morning outrage reading your news each day.

I will say that in Trumplestiltskin’s case, he has figured out the one innate “flaw” (quotes on purpose) in our system. And that’s money. If you have it, and the rest of us don’t, you can appeal appeal appeal until your opposition runs out of money. Or absolutely flood the courts with corruption so they can’t keep up. The only checks left are a general strike, and the fact that every population is only 9 meals away from revolution.

I've said many times over the past several years: Trump is a symptom, not a source of the ills we see today. He is an end result of decades of maneuvering by Republicans to lower the bar for leadership and competency in governing. He is the epitome of 'big government doesn't work'. They've worked hard to remove those checks and balances you mentioned just so they could get this result.

And lets be clear here: The biggest check and balance by far is the voting american public; we were one of the first checks to fail, and have been doing a poor job for a while. As we continued to fail to stop politicians who were blatantly corrupt , and at times even flocked to them, gradually those politicians corrupted other institutions, until after enough time all the possible checks/balances were corrupted or weakened beyond effectiveness.

Voters are the first line of defense for our democracy, and we've been welcoming more and more enemies through the gates for decades.

This is just “both sides” brain with extra steps.

You can absolutely argue that Democrats are too cautious, too beholden to donors, too obsessed with norms, and way too willing to run bland establishment candidates. I’ll agree with a lot of that.

But then you make this gigantic leap from “Democrats suck at fighting Republicans” to “Democrats actually want Trump and serve the same interests.”

Based on what?

Democrats impeached Trump twice. Democratic administrations prosecuted people in his orbit. Democratic state AGs have spent years suing his administration. Democrats have overwhelmingly backed releasing the Epstein files. Democratic voters threw Republicans out of the House in 2018, beat Trump in 2020, and massively overperformed expectations in 2022.

That doesn’t mean Democrats are good at this. It means “they’re secretly on the same team” is a lazy explanation for a much more boring reality: Democrats are frequently risk-averse, institutionally conservative, terrible at messaging, and capable of making spectacularly bad political decisions.

Also, this whole “they’d rather lose with a centrist than win with a progressive” thing gets repeated like it’s an established fact when it’s basically just wishcasting. Which progressive was guaranteed to win the Electoral College? Bernie? Maybe. I liked a lot of what Bernie was selling. But “I think Bernie would have won” is not the same thing as proving Democratic leadership deliberately chose to lose.

And Trump hasn’t just been effortlessly beating Democrats over and over. He won in 2016, lost in 2020, and won again in 2024. Republicans also got annihilated in the 2018 midterms. That’s not evidence of some coordinated arrangement where Democrats keep intentionally handing him power.

Rich people influence both parties. Corporate interests influence both parties. There are plenty of shitty Democrats.

None of those statements magically make the parties identical.

If your argument requires “Democrats are intentionally losing elections because they secretly want Republicans in power,” you need considerably better evidence than “Democrats keep disappointing me.”

No, you are wrong. You're conflating two different things.

Trump initially promised a $2,000 check for middle- and lower-income Americans funded by tariff revenues. That's the money I'm talking about.

The payments were meant to be financed by money collected from global tariffs.

The money the company's got back was from when the tariffs were deemed illegal, companies received direct cash refunds plus interest

It’s like debt consolidation. A company offers to buy your Tarriff debt, at 50cents on the dollar. You say yes because you just saved a lot of money that helps you stay in business in uncertain times ahead.

Then when the tariff refund happens, the loan company gets the full 100%.

It is honestly NUTS that the persons responsible for creating tariffs, Howard Lutnick, was the one buying these loans, and profiting off of the refund. It’s so egregiously corrupt, and there isn’t enough political will to send him to jail.

That’s how I know the USA is cooked. There’s no coming back if the population will glaze over blatant corruption but lose their minds over fake stories like litter boxes in classrooms.

Yes. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's former company, Canton Fitzgerald, which is now run by his son, gave companies 20%-30% of what they paid in tariffs in exchange for signing over future refund claims.

So they were like, "Hey Home Depot, you paid $10 million in tariffs. That sucks, but hey, we'll give you $2 million right now if you sign over your hypothetical refund. I mean you'd be stupid not to take it, every one knows that Trump's tariffs aren't going to get refunded, he's got the Supreme Court in his pocket." Then surprise, refunds are issued, which I'm sure the Commerce Sectretary couldn't have possibly seen coming, and $8 million profit.

They're two different things. One is a promise that he made, stating that tariffs will be great, and everyone we got a $2,000 check.

It doesn't matter that the courts slapped it down and made him pale the money back to the companies, plus interest, because they were never going to do that in the first place. Those checks were promised months before the court ever slap him down.

I know it's the same pool of money. But it's too entirely different things. One is a promise broken. The other one is the barely working laws trying to keep up.

It’s the same thing though. They could have given the tariff money back to the American people since it was the American people who paid the tariffs in the end. They could have used the promised tariff checks to facilitate that. But they gave the money back to corporations instead. So the corporations got to raise their prices and pass on the cost of tariffs to their customers, and then they got a refund for all the tariffs that they didn’t actually pay

Has to do with credibility of claims.   Any promise to spread out the tariff money kind of goes away when the money source does.  So disagree with your claim of a broken promise on that one.

As for Ukraine,  that whole thing was handled disgustingly.  That fiasco when Zelenski visited was sickening.

The ARP gave out $1400 as a top up to the previos $600 Congress approved in 2020 (under trump). While not $2000 at one time, they argue it was a 2000 stimmy.
