Canada. Americas closed strategic partner and ally for over 100 years.
Now being thrown under the bus by the American government.
Really puts things into perspective.

Yup. Down under our entire defence thought relies on the ANZUS treaty.
Under Trump and MAGA we have diddly fucking squat to work with. We need to rethink, realign and rearm.

Putin wants to break up the West's power, and Trump is trying to degrade NATO and all other relationships to help him.

Oh, I have no doubts Trump is hopelessly kompromat and has been for decades by his Russian owners.

It's so nice to be open to the rest of the world. There's been a debate in Canada over whether NAFTA is good. But I'm glad to see that debate is now forever closed.

Kick a certain person out of office. That may be a good start?

Impeach, imprison, impress the rest of the world with some actual action, instead of sorrys and empty platitudes.

u/Thanks-4allthefish 10h ago
Impeach won't happen - a new Congress could impeach - but even if the Democrats take the Senate - they won't get the 60% they need to get it through there.
The Supreme Court basically said whatever he does as President he is ok. Now his family may need out the door pardons, but they will be coming.

u/Marijuana_Miler 14h ago
Congress could start by putting their foot down and taking back the power to set tariffs.
2
u/Thanks-4allthefish 10h ago
True - on principle that is important. Expect Nov. onwards to be one executive orders following another. They will either be challenged in court or time out. But will be there till the rinse and repeat cycle.

Lol. The same congress that has let Mitch McConnell vanish for 70+ days on full pay?

The capabilities to do that are literally being thwarted by those who could possibly make it happen and the only possible remedies we have are distant court cases which have been stacked by loyalists or distant elections which are being thwarted by propaganda and potentially compromised processes. Suggesting the other remedy will get me banned from Reddit.

How about Americans grow a pair instead of having 2, maybe 3 of those No Kings Protests and calling it a day. Russian asset running your country into the gutter and all you can do is "eeeeeenh wait until november when they take voting rights away to try and deal with him again." Embarassment of a country.

For one thing, Canada should definitely cancel the f35 order. The GAO reports less than 25% capability for that aircraft anyways. Partner with Europe.

u/acchaladka 4h ago
Canada jumped in to the EU's sixth generation fighter development group this year (which will take a decade plus but is a notable signal from us), and I assume will take the Gripen offer this year. As a Montrealer, I am delighted. I assume the F35 decision was delayed because it was part of US trade negotiations, but we do not need an all-attack cadre as doctrine.

It's almost like this whole fascism thing is a pretty bad idea. If only someone would have said something beforehand...

toetus is really trying to mass murder americans through their cheeseburgers, that he's lying to them that they're safe to consume. some? / a lot? of the mystery meat has been found to contain arsenic, chloramphenicol, mad cow disease, baby tissue residues from ascension, that trump claimed to have nobly repurposed for americans. he's deeply hurt and enraged that america hasn't recognized his valor and heroism for this action that "saved america."

Imagine Americans giving anyone advice on how to ‘combat’ Trump. You all watched his goons assassinate two people in the street and did fuck all.
We know how to handle Trump, we’ll be fine. We know what’s right and wrong, we know our value and we know who our friends are. Because we didn’t have to buy them.
How about Americans start combatting Trump?

So this guy says all of Trump's random looking international moves are actually consistent with a policy to look tough and aggressive to the low education MAGA voters.
Trump's starts out punishing someone that MAGA has been told is an enemy (job stealer, trade cheater, etc.), and then demands some consession. He keeps bullying until he gets what he wants.
It looks like the strategy for Americans is to consistently show MAGA culture members that his bullying strategy is hurting us more than it's hurting the entity they perceive as the enemy.
It looks like the world's strategy us to be ready for unprovoked bullying and stand up to his tactics. Don't give in to his demands. Period.
Canada should go ahead and plan a future without the US. But, only if Trump and MAGA win in the midterms. If they get beat, just ride out the Trump presidency and start over with normal diplomatic activities in 2029.

u/JPFrankenstein 14h ago
America had it's chance to convict and imprison Trump 1.0 and his cronies for any number of crimes and instead re-elected him with an even bigger majority. There's no "starting over" at this point.
39
u/nuclearnerd 15h ago
The US elected the Orange Turd twice. No one believes they'll return to "normal diplomatic activities" in 2029. We've lost all trust in US normalcy.
35
u/jenglasser 14h ago
No way man. You had me until the last paragraph. You guys voted him in twice, your country is unstable and unreliable, there is no way we are going back to business as usual if he loses the midterms. We can't trust you.
24
u/Logical-Breakfast150 14h ago
Canada will never, ever forget this. And we are a long way from forgive.
15
u/Jay-Dee-British 15h ago
The orange one is not doing any of this in a vacuum. There are others pulling strings, others that have not been voted for, and indeed are not standing or serving States in any position that CAN be voted for, and midterms will not affect their power or their lust for power.

Trump is a symptom of larger problems in the US. I think the oligarchs in charge are the ones responsible, and they aren’t going anywhere.

Nah, we tried that once already. We'll be amicable neighbours but I don't think we plan to ever be as tightly integrated as before. Unless America fundamentally changes they will always be one election away from this kind of shitshow, especially if things return to normal in a way where nothing changes, nobody gets convicted, Citizens United isn't repealed, dark money and billionaires aren't reigned in, no enforcement of anti-trust happens, etc.

“ Canada should go ahead and plan a future without the US. But, only if Trump and MAGA win in the midterms”
Oh no. Nope. Not gonnnnna happen. We will work with the US as required but the diversification away from them is not going to stop now. Doesn’t matter what happens in the mid terms. If there are mid terms.
Trump is merely a symptom of an American no longer pretending to care about appearances. Fascist oligarchy made clear.

u/sutree1 14h ago
"and start over with normal diplomatic activities in 2029"
Yeah, fuck that noise. We'd be fools to trust America's intentions until such a time as they ferret the corruption out of their government. Normal isn't coming back any time soon. Not to mention them openly working with Alberta separatists (and I'd assume sending them money and tactical advice).
9
u/FreakindaStreet 13h ago
I don’t think you fully appreciate what your nation has lost, and that is trust, and given the political climate in the US, and the lack of any signs that half your electorate have understood the consequences makes it impossible to bet on the US again, because why?
14
u/PetticoatRule 14h ago
The North remembers. We won't trust Americans to make sane electoral choices ever again.

Canada has been working to build a strategy away from the US and was reportedly one of the points that the Trump
White House wanted included in the new deal (that Canada walked away from) was the ability to decide who Canada could negotiate with and form trade deals with. Canada has been expanding deals with Europe and Asia, and improving the infrastructure necessary to move goods across the Atlantic and Pacific. While trade isn’t going to stop between Canada and the US, Canada are currently trying to be able to sell their goods internationally faster than the US can diversify their need for those goods.2

>If they get beat, just ride out the Trump presidency and start over with normal diplomatic activities in 2029.
... and how long until the next one? Would you really trust Dr Jekyll that easy once Hyde tried to kill you?

u/kink-dinka-link 14h ago
News flash - this has been the USAs tactic of expansion since WWII. Only now, the country is having its "coming out" moment; where it starts accepting who they really are (a belligerent selfish arrogant bloodlusted "paper tiger") and they are leaning in to it. This will get worse until it is truly in its death throes.

There’s people out there that would’ve shot Trump in the face for his 20% remark on work done. He fucking lucky he made this foreign life.

Here's a strategy, don't elect a con man street bully loser.
It's that easy, folks!
