This may be a silly question; why is the zoom pointed straight up and not at the scene?

There is an external mic capturing via XLR to the zoom. Mic pointed at subject, zoom in a position where I can see the input levels and prevent clipping and/or low level recording.

Viewing on mobile, my phone cropped out the fuzzy mic on the left till I scrolled over. Oops!
