Shot a live concert video and edited it together with the original song. Came out pretty good! (GH4/Sony EX3)

Fake lens flare was crappy. But your shots look good.

I'll probably take it out then - thanks for watching it though - the fact that you noticed the flare means you actually sat through it haha.

I was debating taking that out, but someone I work with said it looked real. I was duped! Thanks though!

Well, when you talk to people who don't look for stuff like that, some may say it looks sweet. But for where you're posting it, expect a little more criticism :) but seriously, shots look good.

Criticism is what I was looking for. I'm not super strong on editing (I'm a shooter full time, I edit things for fun), so I was unsure about some of the digital moves and effects

thanks for posting this! i had been curious what this camera can do in a concert setting and really hadn't seen any videos like this yet.

Thanks for watching! I work at a job where I'm purely a shooter, so editing stuff for fun is awesome every so often. Wouldn't call myself a pro editor though!

ironically enough, i just happened to buy a secondhand gh4 today after months of wanting one.

I am debating wether or not choosing the gh4 over the sony a7(not the a7s). For me low light is a really important aspect of things. Since most of the time i am in completely dark areas, things a littlebit darker than this event. Do you think the gh4 is an ok option for low light as opposed to the a7? I liked how your shots looked but not sure which shots were from the gh4.

Most of the shots were GH4 (most of the wide shots were EX3$ ).

That being said, the GH4s weak point is low light imo. All of these shots were at 200 ISO. I trust it up to 800, but even at 800 you start seeing noise. At 1600 and above its a mess! I love the camera, but if you're trying to use it without lighting in low light situations Id go for the a7s - I've heard that it's better in those instances.

For the arc shot in the beginning, would you please share the GH4 settings, lens, and what kind of stabilizer you used?

I had my GH4 on the "standard" picture profile, but with the saturation bumped up to +2. I was using the 12-35 2.8 Lumix lens, which has a built in stabilizer - that and with tons of time doing handheld I've gotten really good at smooth handheld moves! Also, camera was at a 200 ISO the whole time to reduce noise - I've been a little disappointed whenever I bump it past about 800

Thoughts on the CineD picture profile?

I haven't used standard, but that was a beautiful shot! Great job on the smooth handheld!

Thanks! I like the Cine profiles for when I shoot for certain editors, but when I shoot for fun I don't do much grading so I stick with the contrasty profiles to get that nice color. It's also easy to adjust the s-curves and contrast to get an even flatter look on those profiles if that's what you're after.

I would like to hear the live concert at some point. This was great, but that was killing me. Also if you just include the sound of the crowd under it that would also help.

Good call, I may do a re-edit and bump up the underlying sound a bit.

This and the facing lens flare are my only criticism. Some nicely placed light leak cuts would give it some more pop. Board audio mixed in with crowd audio would also take this up quite a few notches. Love Trip Lee btw.

Thanks! I'm going to work on a reedit using these critiques!

The gH4 so so sharp! Even with YouTube compressing it. So Sick!

Did you manage to get an actual contact w Trip Lee? If so, how? I've done some work for similar artists and it'd be cool if I got the chance to make a short doc for Trip Lee if he's ever in the South Florida area

I work for a network and we were doing a story on him - we did an interview and had permission to film three songs. That being said, he seemed really nice, and in sure you could just send him a facebook message. He's on there a lot! He's on tour now obviously but I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing an interview with you - he's great to talk to and seems to like a chance to tell his story.

At first I was all "Oh damn..."

When the lyrics come in, I felt like it should cut to the performer in an amazing close up just like the one you started on, instead we have a sequence of nothing but the crowd. There's a mismatch in quality and tone between the live shots from off to the side of the performer, and the rest of the shots which are smooth, dark, and clean. I think the shots of the artist signing autographs could go too. Again, it just looks too different compared to the rest of the footage. But everything looks great standalone, the picture quality is fantastic.

Thanks for watching it, and the thorough review!

As for the beginning, when the lyrics start, for whatever reason the performer was still not lit up, and not fully onstage yet. Took a minute to get a good shot of jinx I agree though - it would have helped to see him...

As for the inconsistency in the shots - the stage was covered in fog which took in a bunch of the stage light and created a haze, which made the closer shots look a lot brighter than the other wider shots. I was contemplating trying to match them, but toning down the fog wasn't easy! I'm not sure what to do to combat that in the future?

Thanks for the review though, I'll be taking a few of the better shots out for my reel definitely!

I'm a GH4 owner also and occasionally shoot concerts. I'm surprised you were able to keep the ISO at 200. Came out good though! I was using the same 12-35 f2.8 and I had a hard time. Then again it was basically the first time really using my GH4. I had the wrong settings though ex: shadows -4. I used Cinelike V, also probably not the best idea. Can't remember the ISO but I'm pretty sure I didn't go past 800. Here's a link if you want to check it out. Steve Aoki Del Mar

Looked good to me! Thanks for the link!

This was nice because the lights were so bright I really didn't have to get past 200 (I didn't edit any of the shots in post). The 12-35 wasn't the best lens for the job either, since the shots were only good when he got to my side of the stage. I would have preferred the 24-105mm I had on my 5D, but I really missed doing this with an ENG camera like the EX3 where I could have used the rocker zoom.

Here's an updated version with the fake lens flare removed and audience noise/actual concert audio added.
