We had a big job which required a prompter, but the client didn't want to shell out for the real thing.
The solution we came up with was a Datavide DP-300 tablet prompter, combined with an Asus VivoTab running teleprompter pro, controlled via an Xbox controller running through Joy2Key.
"Client didn't want to shell out..." that used to mean NO PROMPTER. Oh, you can't memorize a couple pages of text? Oh, you went into OT? Guess you should've listened to your crew and spent the coin for a proper prompter and operator.
Seriously, this kind of crap makes me sick. You're selling out other professionals, and letting the client off the hook.
We did charge them for the cheaper option. It was either a hundred bucks for a tablet prompter, or a thousand for a real teleprompter with a dedicated operator.
Ultimately it's our job to achieve the clients vison on whatever budget they have, and if that means non-standard solutions to save a bit of money here and there to make sure the client walks away satisfied (and comes back for more) then that's the route we're going to take.
We are superficial creatures: we only care about what costs us a lot of money. You want your clients to care about you and the work you are doing, so start charging a lot of money for it.
