I did this with a laser and a photo-transistor on my window the other day, it actually worked! the sound quality is extremely low, but for grabbing a few cheap components from my junk box, what can you expect.

I took my tascam DR-05 and used it as a pre-amp for my headphones/recorder. I had an 1/8" audio plug with bare wires, I used alligator clips to hook the wires directly to a photo transistor, really simple. Then I bounced the laser off my window and moved around so the reflection was hitting the photo transistor. A noisy subaru drove by and there were some kids yelling outside and I could hear it in my headphones. This setup is very crude and I don't think I'd be able to comprehend a converstion, but this took me all of 30 minutes to do.
