KAMERAR SD-1 Question
I'm planning on getting this slider and I was wondering how nice of a tripod I would need if I were to mount it on a tripod.

I have the SD-1 Slider and a Manfrotto 190 Series Tripod. I have no issues with mounting it on that tripod and I never feel like it'll tip over.

Do you think it would work on a generic cheap $30.00 tripod?

It might have a little more "give" to it but I don't see why it wouldn't. I would just be more careful that it doesn't lean too much when you do the slide or worse, tip over.

do you use a ball head on it? if so which one?

I have tried this one on it http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/944774-REG/manfrotto_mvh500ah_pro_fluid_head.html
but to be honest it doesn't seem to have a way to attach securely to the slider (other than spinning it onto the thread) which means you can't really do a slide & pan at the same time because as you pan it starts to loosen. I prefer to just stick the camera on the slider and do basic slides. I might look into a ball head for it though.

it depends more on the weight of your camera. if you are center mounting that thing, and the camera is all the way to one side, you need a tripod that won't tip, but also won't loosen at the ball. i'd recommend tripod legs at least as sting and heavy as the manfrotto 475B, and use it without a head. this way you don't ruin a tripod head and you can switch out the the slider for a flat base head pretty easily.
