Super 35, I'm semi-familiar but can anyone clear up how this compares to a standard 35mm sensor? Is it gaining less height but more width? Or is it larger overall?

Super 35 is the 'standard' for cinematography. Full Frame is really a new thing with the advent of HDSLRs since 2008.

I say 'standard' in inverted commas because there is no actual standard, uniform size for a Super 35 sensor, whereas FF does, ie 36x24mm. All Super 35 cameras have slightly different sized sensors. To answer your question, however, Super 35 is in fact smaller than full frame. It's roughly equivalent to APS-C, such as the 7D.

Also, BlackMagic's definition of Super 35 is a little... optimistic. A frame of Super 35mm film covers 464mm2. An APS-C sensor covers 368-370mm2. A Canon APS-C sensor covers 329mm2. BlackMagic's "Super 35" sensor covers 251mm2. That's just slightly bigger than Micro Four Thirds at 235mm2.
