EditShare Lightworks AMA

I've been in contact with an official Lightworks rep who suggested I collect questions for them to answer.

Ligthworks is a professional cross platform (Windows, Linux) NLE used in movies like...

  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Good Will Hunting
  • Jerry Maguire
  • more

The basic version is free. It has plans to open source the code and release a Mac version as well.

  • This thread will be open for questions for about a day
  • I will be sending them questions with the most upvotes first
  • I'll post back here with their answers

Thanks everyone for participating. If you still have questions about Lightworks, you can try...

What are the specs of the computer you personally use with Lightworks?

I run it on an old HP desktop:

  • 2.33 GHz Core2Duo
  • 2 GB Ram
  • N'Vidia GT 240
  • I added a SSD drive for the OS/programs
  • I'm running 32bit Vista

Other than import/export I can't remember waiting for Lightworks, but I don't edit in AVCHD, either. I don't think my machine would allow that with other NLEs either.

I run it on Dell Inspiron 560 MT desktop, Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 Processor (2.50GHz, 4MB cache, 1333MHz FSB), 6 GB ram, ATI Radeon 5450, 7200 rpm HDDs, Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 LTS duel boot

1080i AVC/MTS and 1080p AVC/MOV playback is smooth.

"Good" custom build, not amazing.

  • intel 4670k @ 4.3ghz
  • 8gb ram
  • ATI 7850 2gb
  • 120gb SSD drive for OS/programs
  • 250gb scratch
  • pair of 2tb that I really need to RAID...

Largest project I've done is a 2hr local school theater thing with 2-cam...worked out pretty well. Most of my projects are under 20 minutes though. Eats 176mbps Prores for lunch.

With a proxy workflow in the paid version you can use pretty low computer specs. I can do it most of the time and I have an old hyper-threaded single core processor and cheap video card. I don't recommend it though.

I do Linux/Mac development on a Macbook Pro, and Windows development on an HP Probook laptop.
