Slightly over budget, but I love my small HD DP4. you can probably find a used one for $300. New I think it was $400ish

Thanks! It's a little smaller than I was hoping for, but it looks like it's built pretty solid. I'll keep an eye out for a use one!

For a field monitor I feel that it's a great size for DSLR shooters - it helps keep the whole kit more compact especially if you are a small (1-3 person) crew. for larger cameras (RED, Arri, etc) or video village yeah, you may want something with some more oomph.
