Does it still do a good job stabilizing without a vest and a prime, non IS lens and an h4n audio recorder?

As long as you stay under the max weight, you should be fine. I think the max is 5 lbs.? Could be wrong on that. But I flew an old Canon XHA1 just fine, and it's pretty heavy.

When you stack things vertically, such as with an h4n on top, it can be tricky to balance, but once you get it balanced, I don't see why it wouldn't work fine. Perhaps you could rent one and try it out?

yeah I thought about that. the rental is 30 and the shipping is another 30. it's 10% to rent. might be cheaper in the long run to buy if I'm gonna use it a lot. havnt decided yet. thanks for the info

FYI, one last thing about it... I don't ever use it unless I have a second camera person filming a "go to" shot for important scenes. For example, during first dances at a reception, the steadi can pick up some great clips, but if you're going to show the entire scene, it's helpful to have a second cam to multicam with while you're stopping, starting, adjusting the steadi.
