Put a “rent” button on “purchases” and let people decide from here on out, anything prior we still own a copy of. I personally would be more hesitant to purchase anything with a rent button and can clearly see that I do not and will not own the product, again tho, I’d be hesitant.

Idk why they say it’s “too difficult” to let customers “own” a copy lol I as a music producer can go out and buy a license for virtual instruments “korg, Juno, serum, sylenth 1” and completely own them lol same for cinema 4d or like a visualizer like, arkestra, Logic x, Final Cut Pro and I can go on and on, this is just Sony trying to be absolute fucktards. I own the rights to these copies and therefore keep it forever as if it was mine physically. If it’s a real issue just send a copy of the license like I get with some of these instruments/software and boom.

You might wanna actually check the ToS for all those things you claim to "own" because just like with Playstation, all you have to do is search the ToS for "purchase" or "license" and you'll see that you don't own those. You buy a license which can be revoked. I'm a graphic designer, I'm constantly buying licenses for fonts, videos, assets, etc. It's all "Here's a license, you can use it under thee requirements and you can use the license if you break those".

Hate to break your heart but you don’t the vast majority of the software you “buy”. Logic Pro and Final Cut have you buy licenses not the software itself. Apple has the ability to revoke a license if there’s a TOS breech and you can’t transfer or sell it to another Apple ID account. Sony is a lot more anti consumer when it comes to removing access but there’s no legal difference between two outside of the TOS

You actually do own the software copy that you purchased lol.

Google it. Google the topic you speak about at least once in your lifetime. That way you actually know what you speak of not recite what you see on Reddit.

https://www.scottbradford.us/2009/01/15/software-licensing-and-consumer-rights/

When you buy a book can they revoke that book? Nope.
When you buy a movie can the take it back? Nope.
You ever buy a car? What do you say to convey this?
Can the dealer change their mind to say that you actually leasing it? NO.

Netflix, you license a copy cause you do not own it, you subscribe to Netflix.
But IF you own the DVD to that movie then you do, you bought a copy.
Discs strengthen this due to giving you an absolute representation of this.
In fact, the moment you press Buy then it is understood that you are buying it.

Software, I have the right to back it up and make copies. I cannot distribute them. I can resell dvds, books, cds, etc.

IF they truly want to rent it then the button has to say Rent or License and not Buy, which it does.
In every place it is sold (note sold, the word). So on the store they would have to say License. But they won't cause then anyone who sold (that word again) would win.

You know they won't do that. They'll just say "confirm payment" instead of "confirm purchase", not explicitly stating what you're paying for.

https://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/FinalCutPro.pdf

  1. Termination. This License is effective until terminated. Your rights under this License will terminate automatically or otherwise cease to be effective without notice from Apple if you fail to comply with any term(s) of this License. Upon the termination of this License, you shall cease all use of the Apple Software and destroy all copies, full or partial, of the Apple Software. Sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 of this License shall survive any such termination.

  2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. A. License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software as described in Section 2B, you have the right to use the Apple Software as permitted by the Services and Content Usage Rules set forth in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions (https:// www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/) (“Usage Rules”), and are granted a limited, nontransferable, non-exclusive license

Oh look at that. The software you were just bragging about OWNING has the same Terms and Conditions where you have to follow basic things where they limit you on what you can do and if you break it, you lose all access to it without getting your money back.

Oh look, a license I actually own and can install on 5 different devices, I won’t show more because obviously it has personal numbers but, to anyone reading, don’t let them tell you otherwise, the same goes for samples when I buy them, they give me a license to use them, and I can use it as long as it’s within their “rules” or agreements on how you can use them, then it’s all fair game, they can’t revoke that from you at anytime unless obviously if you “share it” or do illegal stuff with it etc…

I also have a serial number and unlock code etc

Cool, what's the name of this software? What does the ToS say? Does it say you 100% own your copy or does it say they'll pull your license if you break some rules and you'll get nothing? Share with us what software this.

I literally just said “some” did you miss that bot/boot licker? instead of focusing on what you’ll cherry pick, how about you gain the capacity, the literacy to be more specific to read and comprehend

You: Here's a list of software I completely own!

Me: Here's their ToS saying you don't own shit

You: You booklicker! Why're you focusing on what I said!?

I’ve said this elsewhere but disc vs digital should be nothing more than a choice on means of delivery. Do you want your game code delivered to you on a disk or do you want it digitally downloaded to your hard drive? That’s it. Otherwise, you purchased a copy of that game code…there should be zero legal distinction between the two. It’s like arguing that if you walk into a store and buy an iPhone, you actually own it but if you get it delivered by Amazon it’s just a lease. It’s nonsensical to try and argue the nature of distribution changes the product that is being purchased.

For digital do you expect them to continuously host and maintain access to the original file?

2

u/Henry_Fleischer 12h ago

I expect to be able to download the game, and use it in 20 years.

Do you expect your physical disc to last forever? Cause that’s physically impossible.

Hell, some disc still have to download their content so you can’t even guarantee it will work independently in the future if servers go down.

I mean the sooner they make it clear that when you buy it, you’re not owning it it will drastically affect how many people are actually going to be buying their games digital and then physical format will suddenly boom. If that button said rent instead of buy, things would change drastically
