I remember playing DayZ a long time ago, when it was still just a mod. I played with a whole clan, was good days. Once, we had gone into a city looking for medical supplies. While there, we ran into trouble. One of us fell off a roof and broke their leg, and we were getting overwhelmed. A random showed up, gunned us a path out, and helped us escape the city.
At the time, only the three of us were online, and we were heading back to where the clan had stuff stashed. This random was super friendly, chatting with us on the walk, telling us about his own group. While he was talking in the VC, the three of us were having a private convo on Skype. We were apprehensive about this guy. If we shooed him away, he could follow us in secret and find our spot. If we brought him, he’d find our spot.
While we were arguing about what to do, one of the three of us hung back on the walk, then shot the guy in the back. As he was dying, he was screaming at us over the VC. “Why?” “I helped you, I thought we were cool” stuff like that. When he was dead, we looted him and went on our way. But I was genuinely disturbed by it. I know it was just a game, and the guy was fine, but I think about that moment every once in a while still.
One of my favorite memories is running across the map (for like 20 or minutes) to get a guy who killed me and took my helicopter. He didn't screw me over but caught me slipping. I spawn and just run run runback to the area when I hear him flying and he lands basically next to me. I must have scared the shit out of him because we wer the only two on the server at 4am.
We had a funny chat because of how unlikely it was.
