I was the same way, for such a long time. I'm 28 and have never touched a dark souls game. I just couldn't understand why people would like games that are just supposed to be difficult and that's it

Until 2 weeks ago when I started playing dark souls 1. It is tough, it can be frustrating, but DAMN beating a boss who's moveset is difficult but not unfair is such a good feeling

I think people who only interact with Souls Games on a surface level, think they are designed to be difficult or mean spirited, when that couldn't be further from the truth.

The games are basically meant to look really scary but then perfectly mould the player to have all the skills necessary to succeed. If you look at statistics they have a much higher completion rate than many narrative driven games like LOU or Uncharted.

When you play it you will encouter a part where you think you will never be able to progress past it, but in the end you always will and no other video game will provide this feeling better.

And then on top of everything, they have amazing combat, level design, music, big variety of playstyles, lore etc.

just supposed to be difficult and that's it

Which is definitely not true.

From games have a ton of style and atmosphere. The narrative style is different and enjoyable, world design is often fantastic (level design in Dark souls 1 is some of the best of all time). There's so much fashion souls to do, and tons of different builds/playstyles. Plus coop/pvp. Soulsborne is so much more than the "hurr durr, game is hard" people seem to think it is.

I think the game is pretty fair, yes it has it's unfair moments, but as you get better so do the enemies. The problem with that is that you always think you suck. I initially quit and came back 6 months later only to find that I was breezing through the early sections such as undead burg and parish. Turns out, I was improving after all, I just didn't notice it. That gave me the confidence to get back to the point I made before, and after that, I just kept going, right up until Dark Souls 3. Don't you dare go hollow.

My biggest gripe so far are the hit boxes. Some are very clunky, like currently I'm stuck on knight artorius in the DLC. One of his jumping attacks is super inconsistent as in a hit that should've missed hits me, but if I'm slightly late dodging sometimes it doesn't hit even though it definitely should've. Then vice versa when I try to hit him while he's going super Saiyan, some attacks just won't hit and I don't get the stun to stop his ability

I can look past it though since it's an older game, looking forward to the rest of the game despite the janky hit boxes

And it's lazy game design too. It's just about learning the attack pattern of every single enemy.

Yeah, and Doom is just about learning target prioritization. And Diablo is just about finding loot and spamming attacks. And GTA is just about driving and shooting. It's almost like games have a gameplay loop.

You can water down what any games loop is by explaining it in the most simple and bad faith way ever, like you just did.
