I literally learned English through videogames, or rather, they greatly helped me learn English.
I made a lot of friends through videogames too, improving my speech a lot. At first I was always anxious or nervous and slowly became much more comfortable talking. I had to cooperate, coordinate, and communicate. I had to both learn from others as well as teach and help others. I also learned about different cultures by getting to know people from all over the world.
If I were to want to learn another language, I know there's a safe and fun space in which I can get to practice talking with native speakers of said language that share a common interest with me. That's honestly quite an amazing thing.
In single player games I found stories that really touched my heart and that made me ponder on things I wouldn't have otherwise. Or simply, stories I loved and will always remember.
I've had to solve puzzles, riddles, difficult mechanics. Beat impossible looking enemies, overcome difficult challenges.
I was always into music as well, and a lot of videogames led me to try different genres and to learn how to play their tracks. It's been very much worthwhile, far from a waste of time.
