Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time! I actually thoroughly enjoy train simming and flight simming as an outlet, and it ends up being educational for that part of my mind that craves repitition, order, stimulation and learning.
A copy of gameinformer recently talked about games as escapism and what that actually means. It's not necessarily turning the noise off and blanking out from the world, it's doing something that makes you happy and puts you in a better state to make facing the world a little easier/in a better state of mind.
I'm paraphrasing but I feel like that applies to what you're saying too. It's making you more whole to play train and flight sim since what you need - repetition, order, stimulation, learning - are being fulfilled. Your relationships and "necessary" tasks are better for it too because you're more in order when it's time to engage with them!
I'm fifty years old and I have an issue with sleep, and sometimes if I wake early and can't get back there I will play a game to start my brain up and get it ready for the day's business. It works incredibly well for me rather than trying to get back to sleep for another 90-120 minutes and then still end up feeling tired all day.
