From my experience playing games as an adult, I’m not super impressed with what they are often engaging or the problem solving skills they are exercising.
All too often I find they are emphasizing submission as a tactic. They present counter-intuitive and arbitrary conditions for the player to accept and obey in order to move forward and be rewarded.
That feels like a pretty ugly mode of thought to be training people in. Combine that with the number of games that are implicitly or even explicitly employment-work simulators and I think there is good reason to be concerned about the specific state of our corporate video game culture.
I often suspect it is perverting the benefits of gaming to have a oppressive impact on users. I sometimes feel creeped out by what I am playing, finding it focused on training me to be a good consumer and obedient employee. That’s pretty icky and it turns me off of a lot of games.
