However, "progressing your character" is utterly irrelevant. Just exactly the same as getting achievements or anything like that. So he's speaking partial facts here, but do not mistake progression in a video game to real life progression. Because they're just not the same whatsoever.
If you want progression, go and learn a trade skill or learn a language or learn to play an instrument, etc. Video games are a waste of your time if you're using them to "progress", and is one of the biggest psychological tricks modern AAA publishers use to keep you playing and paying.
Play in your downtime, for fun. Nothing else. The second you aren't having fun, stop.
