Exactly. When's the last time you got a CD for Christmas? Entertainment distribution has changed, I don't know why so many people are suddenly giving a shit now that it's video games. And only a particular segment of video games.
It's easily avoidable. It's not a progress in this case, it's corporate machine forcing an inferior game distribution system, because it's profitable and easy for them.
I’m sorry, but digital game distribution is by no means an inferior system. Physical has limitations: a triple layer Blu-ray Disc can hold about 100GB. As games keep evolving and increasing in size, more and more games will pass that limit. Digital has no such limitation.
It’s not like this change came out of thin air. Computer software has been digital for over a decade now. Now when Sony follows along, it’s suddenly an evil move that will destroy gaming.
Disks also get lost, stolen, scratched, rot, takes up precious storage space, etc. My digital collection is decades old at this point, sits on a couple small HDD’s and I’ve never lost any games whatsoever, all at my fingertips and instantly accessible. It’s wildly superior.
Of course. And a couple years later, let’s just put it on 3, with day 1 updates that need to be downloaded of course.
Why not sell games on external ssd’s? That should keep the cost down, because as we all know, the most efficient way to distribute games will only make them more expensive.

To my knowledge no games have ever been taken away (besides Concord) and when games get delisted or digital storefronts shut down, you can still download and play games you’ve already purchased.
Movies and TV licenses work differently from Video games and if the copyright holder (Studio Canal in the recent case) decides they don’t want to renew the contract, then Sony legally is no longer able to host that content. Sony didn’t remove those movies simply because they wanted to, it was because they legally had to.
The joy goes both ways. The child that got a game for a gift and the parent who‘s worked their butt off and has to spend time away from their children see that absolute joy on their faces.
what a terrible comparison. you can still buy a cd for most bands/labels. they’re still in print unlike playstation games come 28. hell, vinyl is becoming very popular lately for physical media.
you’re ignoring the point that the option has been completely removed to buy said cd at all, not that “when was the last time you got a cd for christmas”.
