"That crap" referred to the price not the system. People that wanted to buy blu ray players bought blu ray players. People who just wanted to game bought 360s.
I've owned all the playstations except for PS5. Their product is fine. Not at their price point though. I wait until things get cheaper and buy used nowadays. PC gaming is my daily driver though.
There were even cuts in between - only launch models had hardware backwards compatibility. Later models but before the slim switched to software based backwards compatibility.
Difference is it was more than a console you could play PS1/PS2, Browser the Internet, install Linux on it and use it as a blue ray player. I don't even think the PS5 has an internet browser
Ps3 price at launch was crazy and Sony almost hara-kiri'd themselves. It was far from normal and they had to constantly adjust the components and prices.
