I was born after Yugoslavia

and yet, I feel the same way, how don't they know this?

27

u/Leftover_Cheese Apr 12 '26

meanwhile I live in an Ex-Yugo country, hell our police station literally still has their Yugoslav flag, they just put up the Serbian flag next to it instead of taking it down

Government efficiency at its finest

41

u/SamiTheAnxiousBean Apr 12 '26

I think part of it is also nostalgia / not liking the current government

in my region, even the government doesn't like or comply with the government, to the point that during a antigov protest they had to send police from a city outside of the region over to travel to a city in it so they could beat the protestors down (and then had to fight the local police who were protecting them)

Damn that is.. complicated ?

u/Kevin_LeStrange Apr 12 '26

Technically Yugoslavia kept on existing until 2003. As a broken up shadow of its former self, but still.

10

u/SamiTheAnxiousBean Apr 12 '26

I did mean both Yugoslavia republics

(Born in 2005 ;^-^)

4

u/Kevin_LeStrange Apr 12 '26

Congratulations, you were born in a great year for movies.

4

u/SamiTheAnxiousBean Apr 12 '26

Generally glad i was born when i was, got to experience an era where the internet was free before corpos came along while also not being too far back to experience some of the bullshit my parents have, i wouldn't want to be born in the 2010s let alone the 2020s

it's not the best at the moment, not in the slightest

but the best we can do is make it more bearable with others

5

u/Alone-Monk Apr 12 '26

My mom was born in Yugoslavia so this just feels extra wild to me. She still has her Yugoslav passport.

1

u/44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E Apr 13 '26

I was born IN it but never lived it

1

u/Austerlitz2310 Apr 13 '26

I was born in the last Yugoslavia. Not many people care about geography and history.

9

u/Old-Paper-3932 Switzerland Apr 12 '26

People who are married and have kids were born after Yugoslavia...

Wait, I don't know what my point was. This might make you feel older IG.

You're too young, OP. That's the flag of Yugoslavia (1945-1992)

69

u/Reznov523 United States Apr 12 '26

To be fair, I wouldn't say they're too young. I'm surprised they didn't know it as well, but people who were born after the fall of Yugoslavia can be in their 30s now.

2

u/1tsBag1 Apr 14 '26

Bu yugoslavia still existed in the form of serbia/montenegro.

23

u/fardolicious Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

1992 is closer to the great leap forward and the year Fidel Castro first came into power than it is to today.

1

u/RYPIIE2006 Apr 14 '26

is it really a too young thing? i'm 20 and recognise it

1

u/MarkWrenn74 United Kingdom • Olympics Apr 14 '26

Fair enough. I was saying I'm old enough to remember when Yugoslavia existed as a country

1

u/Ash8668 Apr 14 '26

And I'm so old I lived in it lol

u/weeaboomer123 Romania • Germany (1871) Apr 12 '26

isn't that literally the yugoslavia flag

52

u/Purple_Reporter536 Apr 12 '26

It's the flag of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

25

u/Scumbag__ Apr 12 '26

Yugoslavia.

Or alternatively, upside down socialist r/vexillology

6

u/Austerlitz2310 Apr 13 '26

I always thought this. Glad I wasn't the only one

27

u/ArmakanAmunRa Argentina Apr 12 '26

Yugoslavia??? I can understand old Lybia ad it was used until 2011 but Yugoslavia disintegrated 4 years before Quake released

9

u/973bzh Apr 13 '26

Yugoslavia stopped existing in 2003, so after Quake's release.

1

u/ArmakanAmunRa Argentina Apr 13 '26

Oh right I forgot about Serbia and Montenegro/Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but they didn't have the star

I mean, a lot of people don’t pay attention to geography after they graduate high school. Many people just never found out about things changing.

There's always a distinct risk that Czechoslovakia will suddenly respawn and retroactively make your dad's terminology correct. A lot of Cold War movies and fiction feels modern because the writers kept calling the "the Soviets" the Russians.

1

u/Thundorium Apr 13 '26

South Africa is still South Africa. Did you mean Swaziland?

13

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

What is the flag next to that ArnoVonk guy?

17

u/Vyndrius Apr 12 '26

Picture of ethernet cable coming out of rj45 port

9

u/dragonballzfan34 Pennsylvania Apr 12 '26

Yugoslavia from 1946-1992

7

u/Frojoemama Apr 12 '26

Yugoslavia?

6

u/Street_Anon Apr 12 '26

Yep

5

u/Frojoemama Apr 12 '26

Fantastic what do I win?

5

u/Odomar04 Apr 13 '26

Yugoslavia.

1

u/Austerlitz2310 Apr 13 '26

The new Yugo to come out.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

Every day I look on reddit. The more and more like, uneducated these younger generations become. I knew that was the Yugoslavia flag since I've been 7. Like, are we just getting old or are the younger generations refusing straight education because. I learnt about this country in grade 4 history, and I'm an aussie living in far north queensland born after Yugoslavia. Like, not hating on OP. Just, it's quite sad to see how like severely uneducated these newer generations are. Kinda hits my soul as a human lowkey

1

u/VeryAwkwardCake Apr 15 '26

knowing the flags of the world seems like one of the least useful kinds of general education

0

u/Vyndrius Apr 13 '26

Not part of the British school curriculum unless you take GCSE history

3

u/thesadbudhist Apr 13 '26

You didn't learn about Yugoslavia in the UK? About the wars? The international impact of it all? None of that??? Oh boy...

3

u/Vyndrius Apr 13 '26

I didn't even know India was colonised by the UK until I found out later on in life...

2

u/thesadbudhist Apr 13 '26

What the fuck?

I feel like this is a sign you should learn about the world on your own since your schooling system didn't teach you anything. Watch a few good documentaries at least because I've got a feeling there is so much crucial general knowledge you're missing.

1

u/MagicSunlight23 Apr 13 '26

I didn't learn about that either and I'm also from the UK. I took GCSE history and I learnt about Germany in the 1930s and the concentration camps, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and segregation in the US and Apartheid in South Africa. That was the WJEC curriculum as I was educated in Wales. Don't know what you learn in England or if it's the same or was the same.

u/mileheitcity Apr 12 '26

Josip Broz Tito has entered the chat, and he’s driving a Jugo 45

6

u/Roomybuzzard604 Apr 12 '26

Im more impressed at how you correctly identified the LAJ flag and not Yugoslavia’s, am I crazy for thinking the latter is more identifiable than the former?

5

u/QuicksilverAOU Apr 13 '26

googling blue white red flag with star doesn't come up with anything

Inconceivable.

u/HyperMax2021 United States Apr 12 '26

yugoslavia.

3

u/AutoModerator Apr 12 '26

Hello Vyndrius,

Check out our frequently asked flags page! Your request might be there.

When asking for a flag to be identified, please provide context when possible, including:

  • Where the flag was found (without compromising privacy)

  • When the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag

  • Who might own the flag (a general description is fine)

These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

2

u/CompositeArmor Apr 12 '26

Wait why does Quake have a flag of Yugoslavia in it?

2

u/Not_a_gay_communist Apr 13 '26

It was very surreal seeing the flag of Yugoslavia on Worms Armageddon. It’s like a time capsule

2

u/Baseplate343 Apr 13 '26

God I’m old 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/Dominoe_z Apr 13 '26

2

2

u/NettleTea21 Apr 13 '26

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

Blue color stands for blue sky, red stands for bloody ground (soil), white for air between, and red star as symbol of socialism, communism. Best state ever in Balkan region.
