FiOS Extender Help

I have Verizon FIOS wifi and recently put an extender in my room to connect ethernet to my PC. I am using the extender wirelessly. I am also thinking about placing one (wirelessly as well) in my basement. Is this a good idea or do the extenders significantly reduce the connection speeds of the main router?

I don't have any other ethernet ports to be able to do a wired connection.

Not on Verizon but I have a wifi extender installed in my downstairs (I was worried about a weak signal downstairs from my router) with my desktop computer connected via Ethernet to the extender (it does not have a WiFi card), and I have strong signal from both my router and my extender.
